Seasonal Stories 2:Peace for Christmas
This next story I began a little after Thanksgiving and just finished a few minutes ago. It is entitled Peace for Christmas. Unlike Midsummer Nightmare, this is less of a Dramatic Thriller but more of a coming-of-age story. It also doesn't take place in one year. The story is mostly told in a flashback.
It is about a 14 year old boy named Kevin Johnson who with his mother has returned to their grandfather's home in New York. Years earlier, the mother had ran off with her boyfriend to L.A. and just recently had gotten back in touch with her father. However, the boy isn't keen about the idea for he doesn't know his relatives and would rather spend Christmas in L.A. watching the Lakers. When they arrive he snubs his grandfather. Upon seeing this he decides to get alone with the kid and tell him of a Christmas he had when he was the kid's age.
Each conversation between the boy and the grandfather takes place in this year while the flashback takes place in 1968. The idea of the story is the show that despite people think this generation is much different than the Baby Boomer Generation their are many simularities like the Vietnam Conflict and the current War in Iraq. Along with that are changes that the U.S. was making socially at the time. Overall, Peace for Christmas is a fantastic tale of love, war, friendship, and baseball and really sends a good message to people. So here it is the latest in Seasonal Stories...Peace for Christmas.
Scene 1
Setting:2008 Flying on an Airplane
(We find Kevin Johnson and his mother Patricia on an airplane, Patricia is a 35 year old blonde woman wearing a jacket and a pair of jeans while Kevin is 14 years old wearing a Lakers jersey and gold shorts whilst listening to his I-Pod.)
Patricia:I wish you would just talk to me
Kevin:After what you've done?
Patricia:Look I feel that this trip is good for you
Kevin:Mom, its Christmas break I'd rather be home going to the Lakers game on Christmas and having fun with my friends, not going 3,000 to see someone who you haven't even spoken to years.
Patricia:Well you know that I've decided to go back on past mistakes I made in the past and fix my mistakes
Kevin:You said it yourself, grandpa was always overbearing and protective.
Patricia:Well now looking back, he was right. Just enjoy it, I mean you even get to see your aunts and uncles.
Kevin:Mom, you don't even know them and you haven't since you left.
Patricia:Thats something else I need to fix. Aren't you looking forward to your gifts?
Kevin(mumbling):They can't get me anything I want.
(The plane lands at New York International Airport and they get off. As they walk into the airport they see two men holding up signs for them, its Patricia's brothers Ben(aged 32, brown hair) and Roger(aged 22 short blond hair). She runs to them and they embrace.)
Patricia:Oh my gosh, its been too long, Ben you look great and Roger, oh how you've grown.
Roger:Good to see your in good health.
Patricia:Oh thank you, I'm just glad to see you both again, where's mom and dad?
Ben:He's at the house and she's in Albany visiting her mother.
Patricia:Will she make it home?
Ben:She should be, last time we checked she was still up there but looking to come home.
Roger:Say aren't you little Kevin?
Kevin:You got the Kevin part right, but I ain't little.
Roger:Heh, kid compared to me you are
Kevin:How old are you anyways? You look young for my uncle.
Roger:22
Kevin:Wow thats like what? 8 years?
Roger:I came too late, but its fun to be the baby, you get the most attention
Kevin:Isn't it boring though being the only child at the house?
Roger:Sort of, but it means free rides to school so it all balances out.
Ben:How's Tyler?
Patricia:He sent me a letter a few months ago saying he may not make it back from Iraq in time for Christmas but theirs a good chance for Easter.
Ben:Thats a shame I was hoping to see him.
Roger:Yeah we should get to dad's house, he's been talking about this reunion all week
Patricia:Well let's get going.
(They head outside and into a car with Patricia and Kevin's luggage)
End Scene 1
Scene 2
(We find Patricia, Ben, Roger, and Kevin in the car heading to the house when it starts snowing)
Kevin:Is that snow out there?
Ben:Yeah we get at least a foot a month of it here. Living in L.A. has ruined you, kid. You never seen a White Christmas and on your first attempt in a cold city you will.
Kevin:Anyone live in the neighborhood?
Ben:Plenty of people
Kevin:I mean of my age
Ben:Well not too many its more of a retirement area for older people.
Kevin(to self):...And this trip gets even more boring.
Patricia:Don't worry, when your cousins arrive in 2 days you'll have some fun. Some are a little older but in this family age makes no difference we keep everybody involved.
Kevin(to self in a sarcastic tone):Maybe we can play Monopoly or foosball.
(They arrive at the house and enter)
Ben:Dad, we're here!
(Steve Nelson, a 54 year old male with grey hair enters the room)
Steve:Ah Ben, Roger welcome home and oh Patricia how you've grown
(Steve and Patricia embrace)
Patricia:Oh dad you look great I'm so glad to see you its been too long
Steve:I am very glad to see you again(Kevin enters). Ah-ha this must be the young boy, Kevin.
Kevin:Yeah I am...you got any sodas?
Steve:Haven't had any for years in this house
Kevin:You're kidding me right?
Steve:I kid you not son
Kevin:Well ain't that great...I'm just going to head in the car for a few minutes and chill...literally.
(Kevin heads out to the car and lays down in the back seat)
Patricia:I'm sorry dad
Steve:The boy seems troubled.
Patricia:I really don't know whats been wrong with him. He has been like this for a while now. I just wish he'd be okay with this and just relax.
Steve:I'll tell you what tomorrow you, Ben, and Roger can go out for a few hours and I'll sit down and have a talk with the boy
Patricia:Are you sure he's going to listen to you.
Steve:Truth be told I'm only going to need to keep his attention for 4 hours. I had to keep yours for 18 years til you left.
Patricia:Trust me I have raised to be more obediant to his elders.
Steve:By the time I finish talking with him he'll be alright.
Patricia:Thanks dad
Steve:Anything to help the family.
End Scene 2
Scene 3
(It is the next day we find Kevin walking downstairs where he finds Steve cooking breakfast)
Steve:Ah nice to see you up grandson
Kevin:Wheres everybody at?
Steve:They all went out for some last-minute Christmas shopping.
Kevin:Is Grandma here yet?
Steve:No, she's still in Albany. She called earlier and said theirs a good shot she'll make it.
Kevin:So what do you got on TV around here?
Steve:Ah don't worry about the TV just sit down here and lets have a talk over some pancakes, eggs, and sausage and a nice glass of O.J.
Kevin:I don't really like Orange Juice
Steve:Well I can't attack your opinion but its really good for you especially in this time of the year.
Kevin:Yeah but I'm heading back to L.A. next week I'm pretty sure I won't catch anything just by being here for a week.
Steve:Heh, its funny..
Kevin:What is?
Steve:This is the first time we ever really met and I can't see a difference between us.
Kevin:What do you mean?
Steve:We're not so different you and I
Kevin:What are you saying?
Steve:Theirs no real difference between the both of us.
Kevin:Gramps, I hate to break it to you but theres a big difference between you and me.
Steve:Trust me, contrary to what people in my generation say, their is no difference between my people and yours.
Kevin:Theirs plenty of differences.
Steve:Like what?
Kevin:Clothing
Steve:I wore jeans and a shirt when I was your age
Kevin:Well...it was different.
Steve:Such as?
Kevin:TV
Steve:Whats so different about that we had Dragnet and you have CSI.
Kevin:Look for someone like me to be hangin around with someone like you is just absurd. We're two totally different people.
Steve:Son to me 2008 might as well be called 1968 and you're exactly like me. You just don't show it. I want to tell you a story from my childhood. Its a real good one.
Kevin:How about you tell me later and I'll just go and watch TV.
(He gets out of his chair and walks away)
Steve:Whats there to watch? You got to understand December day-time TV isn't exactly anybody's cup of tea.
(Kevin comes back and sits down)
Kevin:Touche
Steve:Let me tell you a story about a time just like now.
(Flashback to 1968 where Jimi Hendrix All Along the Watchtower is playing)
Steve(narrating):1968 was a year of turmoil and a turning point for America. As the leaves turned brown and the sky grey the country was fighting two wars, one in Vietnam and one here. Bobby Kennedy had died just a few months earlier and before him Martin Luther King passed away. As the musical Hair would say, we were facing a dying nation. However, people were trying to find ways to stay happy.
One way of staying happy was music. In '68 "The Beatles'" album The White Album was released, "The Yardbirds" performed for the last time and "Led Zeppelin" for the first, and suddenly musicians who were previous just that started to form and express their beliefs. Meanwhile at home all of this had caused some turmoil within my family. My father was a World War II veteran and felt that the people fighting for "peace" were a bigger enemy than the Vietcong. My sister had dropped out of High School and ran away from home just a few years earlier only returning when she needed money or(at mom's request) visiting for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
My brother Roger was a hero to me. When I was younger I would always hang around with Roger. We would play football together, go to movies and he was just a great person to know. I felt he was invinceable for he was a Varsity Letterman for Football and Basketball and at the same time always got the most beautiful women this side of Manhatten. However, this times were over and he was now stationed in Saigon fighting the Viet Cong and fulfilling my father's generation's goal of containing communism and establishing the United States as THE power of the world.
Me? I was just a 14 year old boy who was just as confused as what was really going on as everybody else was. At age 14, I was a Freshman in High School and for once I felt like an adult. I wanted to grow up but at the same time I wanted to stay 14 forever. I knew the day was coming where I would have to grow and move on from the baseball games, the toys, and the comics to working a 40-hour week and supporting a family. Til then I just wanted to live high and forget the worries and the world and more about my own future.
(We see younger Steve reading a Spiderman comic)
Douglas(Steve's father):Steven
Young Steve:Yes, dad?
Douglas:What are you reading?
Young Steve:Its Amazing Spiderman #45
Douglas:Son, when are you going to learn that comic book heroes aren't real and the real heroes are the people fighting the war both here and in Saigon.
Young Steve:I understand dad
Douglas:Well, help your mother and I with putting up the decorations, we must get ready for your brother's return
Young Steve:Can it wait? We got plenty of time
Douglas:Any longer of a wait and I'll make sure that "Spiderman" goes into the trash can.
Young Steve:I'm going, I'm going
(Young Steve proceeds to get up and help with the decorations)
Older Steve(narrating):My father never really cared for anything beyond reality. He was sort of a realist. He was never big on movies or television or even stories. To him the only things that were real were the U.S., it's Army, it's President, Vice President, Senators, Government, People, its war, along with the key things, the father, the son, and the Holy Ghost. He had fought in World War II and saw the horrors of war and since he had criticized the entertainment business as "fake and useless" and only would watch Documentaries or the news on television.
Mary(Steve's Mother):Steven can you hold this?
(She hands him thumbtacks to hold while she positions and puts the stockings up)
Older Steve(narrating):They say opposites attract and I guess you can say this applies to my mother and father. Whereas my dad was a hard-nosed military man who spoke from a "realist" perspective, my mother was the sweetest woman in the world. She grew up dreaming of a big star and perhaps singing on broadway but the war came and with nothing going on broadway my mother became a factory worker. When my father returned from Europe, they married and got to work on a family. My brother came first then their was me...at least thats how they made it seem like.
(Their is a knock on the door)
Mary:Can you answer that, Douglas?
Douglas(sitting on his chair reading the newspaper):Sure, I'm going
(While Mary and Steve put up the stockings their is a dispute at the door)
Douglas:What do you want?
(We see Steve's sister, Anna)
Anna:Look, dad, I just want to talk to mom.
Douglas:Oh no, you're not speaking to her.
Anna:What do you mean I can't?
Douglas:Look just get out!
(They continue arguing)
Older Steve(narrating):This seemed to happen every week. My sister would come home from whatever and usually ask for money or to see mom. She had been expelled from High School after taking part in a protest for the Vietnam War that occured on campus. If that wasn't enough my dad caught her smoking marijuana and that was the final straw. He kicked her out and she hadn't been welcomed back since. I never felt it was her fault. After all, when you consider the time period and the amount of the people in the school it was hard to find someone who wasn't doing it.
Anna:Look I just want to see Mom.
Douglas:Fine, you got 5 minutes and thats it.
Anna(walking away):Thank you
(She walks over to Mary while Douglas sits down on the chair with the paper again)
Mary:Oh Anna, how are you?
Anna:I've been a feeling good
Douglas:Must be that L-S-D
(Anna gives Douglas a mean look)
Mary:So what have you been up to?
Anna:Well I've been traveling around with Robin
Douglas(looking up):Who's Robin?
Anna:Just a friend
Douglas:What kind of friend?
Anna:Just a friend, dad
Douglas:Why can't you tell me?
Anna:Because now is not the time.
Douglas:What do you mean it's not?
Anna:It's just...
(Before she finishes their is a knock on the door)
Young Steve:I'll get it
Douglas:Why be secretive about this. Why won't you just tell me?
(As they continue arguing, Young Steve answers the door where an African-American man in his early-20's with an mini-afro, headband, jean jacket, and jeans on)
Young Steve(sort of surprised):Yes?
The Man:Is Anna busy?
Young Steve:Not really just come in
(He enters once he is seen the arguing stops)
Douglas:Who the hell are you?
The Man:Sorry for the entrance, I'm Robin
(He goes out to shake Douglas' hand but Douglas just looks at him then turns to Anna, with an unconcerned look on her face)
Douglas:I see how this is.
(He leaves the room)
Robin:Umm...I'm sorry to disrupt but um I needed to use the phone.
Anna:It's understood
Robin:So is it alright if I can?
Mary:Sure
(He goes to another room)
End Scene 3
Scene 4
Older Steve(narrating):Home life was always something going on everyday. However, in school the "revolution" presence had not been quite felt by my class. In Junior High, it seemed like the change wasn't occuring. The teachers had a 1950's mindset and seemed to ignore the current issues when it came to us. Once I entered High School I experienced a different atmosphere. We were just lost.
Johnny Davis was my best friend. Him and I were just alike. His dad was like mine except he was a little nicer and wasn't really keen on the war. His feeling towards Vietnam was that communist wasn't the biggest threat to America but it's own paranoia threatened the nation. I always wished I was Johnny, it seemed easier being him.
Then there was Dana Gooden. Dana was a very good friend of mine. Her mother and mine grew up together in the city and were always close. Dana and I, however, for the longest time wasn't exactly good friends and I really blamed myself for that. I was sort of a playground bully growing up and I would always do some mean things like shove her in the mud while she was wearing her best dress.
However, to call me the bad one would be a little bit of an understatement. Dana would always find ways to look like an angel while wearing the devil horns. She did her own things like gluing my chair to my jeans(shot of a really young Steve sitting down and standing up with the chair attached to his butt) and bringing all sorts of pain(shot of Dana catching the ball at home and nailing Steve in the um...personal area with the glove and ball). The whole feud, itself was no secret to our mothers. Every Saturday they would meet at either mine or her house to play bridge and every Saturday we would try to get along only for hair being pulled and constant pinching and biting the arguing between us got to the point where are mothers said we were destined to be together.
Now, of course, my six year old self thought "Ew", but things were about to change.
(Johnny, Dana, and Steve sit down at the lunch table)
Young Steve:I am really getting tired of mash potatoes and broccoli.
Johnny:Eh, get over it Stevie, its better than our Junior High lunch.
Dana(eating):Oh, it ain't that bad
Young Steve:You like anything
Dana:That is not true
Young Steve:What do you not like?
Dana(sarcastically):You
Young Steve(clinching heart):Ow that really hurt
Johnny(eating):She got ya their Stevie
Young Steve:So are you playing baseball today, Johnny?
Johnny:I always play
Young Steve:How about you, Dana?
Dana:Nah, not today its too cold.
Young Steve:Too cold?
Dana:Yeah its a bit chilly out.
Young Steve:When has that ever stopped you?
Dana:Today
Young Steve:Oh come on Dana, whats the real story?
Dana:Fine, if you really must know, I'm going out with David Cutler
Young Steve(seemingly upset):Oh
Dana:Yeah we're going to see a movie together
Young Steve:W-what movie?
Dana:The Odd Couple
Young Steve:How ironic
Dana:He said it looks really good but I'll be the judge of that.
Young Steve:Well enjoy yourself
Dana:Oh I will
(She gets up and leaves)
End Scene 4
Scene 5
(We show Steve and Johnny walking outside)
Young Steve:I can't believe she ditched us.
Johnny:What can ya say? The girl is crazy for him
Young Steve:Yeah but we've been playing uninterrupted since the 3rd grade every day.
Johnny:I can see what you mean, but this isn't going to last forever. I mean you had to know that she would grow away from baseball and get interested into other things.
Young Steve:I just wish she would've told us so we didn't have to play a man down
Johnny:Now come on its not that hard to play 3rd and Short Stop.
Young Steve:It is when you got Brett Johnson playing.
Johnny:Don't sweat it Stevie, we'll get em tomorrow
Young Steve:I hope so
(As they keep walking they bump into Dana and David exiting the theater)
Young Steve:Speak of the devils.
Dana:Oh hey Stevie, hey Johnny.
Young Steve and Johnny:Hey
David:Ah who are these fellows?
Young Steve:Ugh, Dave its us Stevie and Johnny
David:You might have to refresh my memory
Young Steve:You played baseball with us for the longest time.
David:Its Nelson right?
Young Steve:Yeah
David:I remember you guys, dang we were a pretty good triple threat the three of us
Johnny:Very good, what made you quit?
David:Eh, I couldn't stand playing everyday. I applaud your efforts to keep the 6 year old rivalry going between you guys and the Radicals but playing baseball everyday gets really boring I prefer weightlifting. You should try it.
Young Steve:We don't need weightlifting in baseball its all about good reads, speed, and dirt.
David:You need to do something else. How about this, we do a triple date on Friday, I take her and you two take each other
(David and Dana laugh)
Young Steve:Ha ha, funny but we don't go that way.
David:I only kid, how about this, you take my cousin, Renee, she's our age and goes to Midsummer High. She's really shy but she should like you.
Johnny:What about me?
Dana:Johnny I think its clear that you and Miss Madeline Combs would be good together.
Johnny:I agree
David:Alright then, it'll be the three of us this Friday. This should be fun. I'll tell you all tomorrow where we meet. Well fellas, I'll see you all later.
Young Steve and Johnny:See ya
(David and Dana leave in a taxi)
(We go back to modern day where we find Steve and Kevin still talking while Steve is pouring coffee)
Kevin:Baseball everyday? How did you manage that.
Steve:It was easy. We all grew up in New York and back then baseball was practically the king of all sports. I remember back in '61 when Roger Maris broke the single-season record. I was in the stadium and was a bit torn because while I thought it would be great to see history I didn't want Maris to break Babe's record. Babe Ruth was a practical in the god in our eyes.
We really loved baseball. However, its no where near as good today as it was then. Back then you had real ball players. Nowadays, its just a bunch of muscleheads who care more about their wallet then team unity and winning.
Kevin:Thats all sports are gramps. Money is everything.
Steve:Money doesn't buy championships. Hard work and trust always prevails.
Kevin:I just can't see who you can even watch baseball.
Steve:What's wrong with it?
Kevin:It's boring
Steve:I can see where you can say that. What sport do you enjoy?
Kevin:Basketball
Steve:Your crazy
Kevin:How?
Steve:Basketball is probably one of the most boring sports I ever played.
Kevin:How can you call it boring?
Steve:Easy no intensity, no thinking. Its just all jumping and running. Whats so boring about baseball
Kevin:Its just it takes too long and literally goes nowhere
Steve:Like basketball?
Kevin:No
Steve:Ha ha ha, kid just relax. I only kid with you.
Kevin:So what happened on the date?
Steve(returning to narration):It was interesting. Johnny and I arrived at Dave's house around 6 and we were in for one interesting night...
Young Steve:Alright, are we ready?
Johnny:Most definately now
Young Steve:We can not let them know its our first time dating.
Johnny:Stevie, I'm pretty sure they've never been on dates either. Besides, its like David told you Renee is shy. Things should be alright
(We show the 6 of them standing in line at the movies)
David:Alright, how about Night of the Living Dead?
Johnny:I'm game
Dana:I don't really think its a good idea how about something romantic like Romeo and Juliet?
Madeline:I agree
Johnny:You girls are cowards. It's not scary
Madeline:I just don't wanna see it.
David:Fine we'lll take a vote. Its 2-2 right now. Stevie, Renee you vote.
Renee:I really don't care.
David:Alright its down to you Stevie. Make your choice
(Steve looks at David and Johnny then to Dana back to David and Johnny, back to Dana then the floor)
Young Steve(softly):Romeo and Juliet
Johnny:You have got to be kidding me...
David:Well its settled by a vote of 3-2-1 we will see Romeo and Juliet. I knew it was a triple date but not that their was 4 girls and 2 guys.
Kevin(interruping):Wait, you chose that piece of junk story?
Steve:Its not a bad story, its really good for getting ladies.
Kevin:Yeah but girls like the "scary" stuff they literally get all over you.
Steve:Maybe the girls you know but back then we had classier women, to get them into your arms was tough alone let alone even date them. Besides I enjoyed the movie.
Kevin:Well what happened?
Steve(returning to narration):After about 2 and half hours at the movies we traveled over to the down town hall where their was a dance going that night
(We see Johnny and Madeline dancing along with Dana and David, Renee and Steve are sitting down having a soda)
Young Steve:So how long have you been living in the area?
Renee:I'd say about a few years.
Young Steve:Why don't you come over to our school?
Renee:I have more over at Midsummer.
Young Steve:Well whats different their than at good ol G.W.?
Renee(hastily):Friends...
Young Steve:Well looking at Johnny, Madeline, David, Dana, and I, you're looking good with friends.
Renee(nervously):I really don't know you guys that well.
Young Steve:Stick around and you'll know us real well.
Renee:I wish I could but I really don't let anyone down at Midsummer.
Young Steve:How about they meet with us. The more the merrier.
Renee:I don't think you all and them would get along.
Young Steve:Johnny and I get along with everybody.
Renee:Well I don't know they're just...different.
Young Steve:What? Are they hippies or something?
(She gets up and pulls his arm)
Renee:Come on
Young Steve:What?
Renee:Lets dance, I don't wanna sit here all night
(She pulls him up and they dance nearby Johnny/Madeline and David/Dana. We go to after the dance where we find them outside the building where a car arrives and Johnny and Madeline leave as David/Dana and Steve/Renee stand together with arms around each.)
David:Well that was a fun night.
Young Steve:I fully agree
David:Most definately, you got your gal and I got mine.
Young Steve:Yup
(Another car arrives, David, Dana, Steve, and Renee fill in and they ride down the road to Renee's house. Once they arrive at Renee's house, her and Steve exit. He walks her to her house)
David:Stevie, I got all night, take as long as you can.
(He winks at Steve)
Renee:I really had fun tonight.
Young Steve:I did too.
Renee:You're a really good dancer.
Young Steve:Thanks, you know what? I think we should do this again next week.
Renee:I don't think we should.
Young Steve:Why not? I felt a real connection back there between us.
Renee:You might have but to me their is no real connection. I don't want to break your heart or anything but it just won't work out.
(She enters the house and shuts the door)
End Scene 5
Scene 6
Steve(narrating):Dating problems with Renee was one of many headaches I had in 1968. I felt like America in the 2nd World War fighting two fronts, the home front and the social front. Days after re-appearing and shocking my dad, Anna had decided to stay around this time and live with us under the condition that their were no drugs, alcohol, music, sex, and Robin had to be hidden. I never understood what my dad's deal was with racial issues. He had grown up in New York City which while was still segregated was a big cultural area even in the 1930's. His deal with Robin I could see because in those days the mixing of skin colors was practically a crime in the eyes of many.
Each day you could literally feel the tension in the room.
(We see Anna and Robin sitting on the couch watching TV when Douglas enters the room)
Douglas:Split, you two
(He sits down between them with Anna to the right and Robin to the left)
Douglas:So when exactly did you two meet?
Anna:It was several months ago, dad.
Douglas:Ah really, where at?
Anna:It was at Jefferson Airplane concert.
Douglas:Jefferson Airplane? Whats that some kind plane trip you took?
Anna:Its a band dad.
Douglas:I don't even think you can even consider anyone today a real musician.
Anna:Just because theirs no trumpets or pianos doesn't mean its garbage. It speaks to me.
Douglas:How can it speak to you?
Anna:Through the rhythm, the beat, and the lyrics. These musicians today understand this generation and write songs about feelings, life, and dancing. Like at the concert when Grace Slick started singing Somebody to Love and it was there I saw him. We gazed into each other's eyes and...
Douglas(interrupting):Erm, thats enough. What exactly is your story, Rob?
Robin:I'm from Georgia.
Douglas:Ah I heard it's nice down there.
Robin:Sometimes
Douglas:Your father fight in the war?
Robin:Yeah he served the last two years of it.
Douglas:Ah, you think he'd be a little upset with your choice of lifestyle?
Robin:Wouldn't know, he's dead.
Douglas:Did he die in the war?
Robin:No, got lynched by a bunch of guys who looked like you because just cause he looked like me.
Douglas:Now no need to get an attitude boy.
Robin:Boy? Who are you calling boy?
Douglas:You because thats what are you a boy to me.
Robin:I hate to break it to you, but I'm 20 years old, I'm a man just like you.
Douglas:Well I hate to break it to you but I'm 44 years old and I don't need to here any talk from some kid. You should be taught some respect.
Robin:Before you teach me anything I think you should learn some respect yourself.
(He walks out of the room)
Douglas(angrily):As long as you live in my house you abide by my rules so get back here!
(Robin keeps walking and heads up the stairs where Steve is sitting, Robin goes into his room and starts playing the guitar. Steve enters the room)
Young Steve:Is it alright if I can come in?
Robin:Sure, kid.
(Steve enters the room as Robin keeps strumming)
Young Steve:I uh heard what my dad said and I'm sorry.
Robin:Its alright kid, I heard a lot worse when I was living in Athens.
Young Steve:How bad was it in Athens?
Robin:It was like night and day. Some days it can be really fun because my friends and I would always go out play some ball, and go to dances. Life can be fun but there was always that fear of the racists breathing down our necks. I personally experienced it.
When I was 2 my dad was working as an informer for the government on klan activites. He was light skinned and as a result passed for white. He would attend meetings undercover and alert the CIA of activites. Well soon the klan was getting suspicious of what was going on and they found out he was part-black. The story goes that one night they came to our house and busted the door down and took him.
As they took him they poured gasoline all over the room and through a match on the floor lighting the house on fire. Mama and I managed to escape that night but my father wasn't so lucky. They took him to an open field, smashed his skulll and hung him. The Klan assumed we were dead but to stay in public as ourselves was too risky. My mother decided to give me up to adoption to my uncle and aunt and bolted far away as she could.
It wasn't until I was about 13 or 14 that I found out what occured. I do not know where my mother is and never really got to know my father. The only things I learned about him were from my uncle and everything he said about him was good.
Young Steve:What got you out of the South?
Robin:Hell broke loose and thats just figuratively speaking. It started in '64 when my friends and I went to a Ray Charles concert. We were on our way home when we ran into a couple of guys that didn't quite like us. They said to us, "Hey boys, just where do you think you're going". I responded by saying, "Look we're just going home, we don't want any trouble".
He turned to his buddy and said, "Look Bucky a nig who doesn't want trouble, how different for a change". A friend of mine wasn't quite the calmest and he responded by saying "If you want to come here and say that trash to us, you better be ready to back it up". He responded by saying, "Oh yeah, well lets see what you got black boy". Thats when it started, my friend shoved him to the ground and next thing I know the other one pulls out his gun nails my friend and another one of my buddies tackles him and starts beating on him.
Thats when the cops came and I didn't want to get in trouble because at the time I was working to getting a college scholarship perhaps to Grambling State or even some school up north. I ran all the way back to my house and was releived to have escaped. I, however, felt bad for my friends especially the next day when I found out that they had arrested both of my friends. Within days their families started rallying people including Dr.King. It was the very last day I was ever in Athens.
The protest started in the morning. We all arrived their around 11am at the bridge nearby the University of Georgia. From their we marched about 15 miles to the local police station. As we drew close to it thought we got ambushed by a fire hose. We just kept trying to march on when next thing I know one of the good ole boys nearby grabs my cousin...I snapped.
I ran over to the guy and soon I found myelf beating down on him, kicking him in the ribs, and giving him two black eyes. Two cops apprehended me but let go'd of me after the hose struck them. The next I knew I was running for my life and I kept running until I was out of the South. I never returned to Athens at the fear of being arrested upon arrving. Up North things have been a little better but theres still ignorant people up here who just feel that its still the 1800's and I should be working in a field.
Your father is just one in a million. Hell for all I know he's a really good guy whose only real problem can overshadow that. I don't know maybe one day he'll learn to accept me. Until that day comes and I hope its soon, he's just another brick in a wall. I'm not going to let it bother me, he's just got to accept that his daughter and I are together and that it's always going to be like that.
I'm just glad that you and your mother have accepted it. However, I would like to win your father's approval. However, its like what my uncle said, "some men, you just can't reach".
Young Steve:I'm sorry to hear.
Robin:It's alright kid, thats all behind me now. The only things I have is your sister, this guitar, and hopefully love from your family.
Young Steve:I like ya, your pretty cool
Robin:Thanks kid.
Young Steve:You know any songs on guitar?
Robin:I've been practicing some. I was reading up on how to play some Hendrix and the Beatles. However, I'm mainly a blues guy.
Young Steve:What exactly are the blues?
Robin:The blues is music that comes from your heart. Its never usually a happy ending but it can be fun.
Young Steve:Can you play a blues song for me?
Robin:Sure, I call this one Life on the Road
Came home from the show
(Guitar Strum)
Had the time of my life

Young Steve:That was really good.
Robin:You should try it sometime.
Young Steve:Can you teach me?
Robin:I can do that.
Young Steve:Alright, when can we start the lessons?
Robin:Anytime
Young Steve:Can we start now?
Robin:Sure kid
(He chuckles)
End Scene 6
Scene 7
(We're back to Kevin and Older Steve at the kitchen table)
Kevin:You play the guitar?
Older Steve:Yeah
Kevin:Can you play me a song right now?
Older Steve:I'd love to but I only remember one song and I'm saving it for tomorrow.
Kevin:So what exactly happened with you and the girl?
Older Steve:Well she had a reason...
(We cut back to 1968 with Steve, Dana, Johnny, Madeline, and David sitting in the school before classes)
Young Steve:You going to play today, Dana?
Dana:It's up to David.
David:Its alright by me just make sure you drop by when you're done.
Dana:I will
David:So Stevie, have you talked to Renee?
Young Steve:Not really she told me that it won't work.
David:What do you mean it won't work? You two looked great together.
Young Steve:I don't know she just said that it wouldn't work.
David:She does this to every guy. Everytime any of us try to get her someone she leaves them high and dry. I'm not letting her kick anyone else to the side. Her number is 555-0868, call her tonight and try to get her back.
Young Steve:I don't think this is a good idea.
David:Do you like her?
Young Steve:Well yeah I do.
David:Then take my advice, pick up the phone, and call her, you will not regret it. She's the type you got to be assertive towards in order to get her. You two will hit it off just fine.
Young Steve:If you say so
(Later that night we find Steve on the phone in his room. It rings and Renee answers)
Renee:Hello?
Young Steve:Is this Renee?
Renee:Yes
Young Steve:Renee this is Stevie, I...
Renee:How did you get my number?
Young Steve:David gave it to me.
Renee:David?
Young Steve:Yeah
Renee:*sigh* Look, Stevie I made it clear the other night...I do not want to be in a relationship with you. You're a nice guy and everything, but it just wouldn't work.
Young Steve:How can it not work?
Renee:Stevie, you and I are two completely different people with completely different views and ideas.
Young Steve:Whats your opinion on the war?
Renee:I'm indifferent
Young Steve:Same here, what about baseball?
Renee:Its fun
Young Steve:I can't find anything we disagree on yet?
Renee:Its not that Stevie, you wouldn't understand
Young Steve:I don't, I want to go out with you and you think I'm nice and cute. Yet you don't want me? I really don't get it.
Renee:Fine you want to know why, Stevie?
Young Steve:Come on Renee, tell me.
Renee:I'm gay, Stevie, I'm gay!
Young Steve(stunned):W-what do you mean?
Renee:I don't like guys Stevie, I like girls.
Young Steve(frantic):How long have you been like this?
Renee:For a while now. Look theres a reason why I always turn down a guy my cousin tries to hook me up with and that is the reason.
Young Steve:Why didn't you just tell me?
Renee:I didn't want to break your heart. That night I thought you woudn't get too attached to me because you might find me boring. However, I accidently led you on and I had to drop you by the end of the night. I am very sorry Stevie, but it can't happen. I think you're nice and cute, and that says alot considering I'm not big on guys.
Their are a lot more girls out there for you Stevie and you'll find someone. I think I already know who you got a sweet eye for.
Young Steve:Who?
Renee:Dana
Young Steve:Dana?
Renee:Yeah Dana
Young Steve:What do you mean?
Renee:You like Dana
Young Steve:No I don't
Renee:Stevie, don't lie to me. I can tell you like her.
Young Steve:We'lre just friends.
Renee:Stevie, I may be a lesbian but I know a lot about connection on terms of relationships then you think I do. The reason why you picked Romeo and Juliet was to satisfy her.
Young Steve:Wow you're good.
Renee:I know these things. How much do you like her?
Young Steve:A lot
Renee:Go for it Tiger
Young Steve:But what about David?
Renee:I know this may sound dumb but from the way she looks at you and him she seems to show more for you.
Young Steve:She can't theirs no way.
Renee:You can't deny anything your whole life, Stevie. Trust me.
Young Steve:What should I do?
Renee:Go for her
Young Steve:I don't know if I can.
Renee:You can do anything if you put your mind to it, Stevie. I got to get some rest, I'll talk with you another time. Good luck, tiger.
Young Steve:Bye
(They hang up we fade out as Steve sits on his bed thinking)
End Scene 7
Scene 8
(We find Older Steve and Kevin still sitting at the table)
Kevin:Wow, that must've sucked.
Older Steve:Well, initially it did. It didn't do any good for my self-esteem. At the time I never had a girlfriend. For once it appeared I would finally get one but she throws a curveball and tells me she's a lesbian.
Kevin:Never had a girlfriend? How old were you at the time again?
Older Steve:14 years old, and never had a girl. I would go to school dances just without and date and I usually just hung around talking to Johnny and Dana.
Kevin:So did you go after Dana?
Older Steve:Your about to find out.(he begins narrating again)Christmas Eve 1968 came up to me faster than I expected. My father was anxious in the anticipation of the arrival of Roger. He had been in Vietnam since June of 1967 and we were all ready to see him. The U.S. Army had promised us that he would not be sent back to Vietnam rather come home and stay home.
It may've been Christmas Eve but that didn't change things in my family.
Douglas(walking into Steve's room):Rise and shine sun, today is a beautiful day. It's only a matter of time before your brother arrives and I want him to see us and the house at it's best so get and go and let's go.
Young Steve(half asleep):Dad, can't you just give me at least 2 more hours of sleep?
Douglas:Absolutely not, we got to get ready Steven.
Older Steve(narrating):Over anxiety can be harmful to anyone who was about to cross a line on terms of friendships with someone he had known for years. I had been thinking about Dana that entire week and whether or not I should go with it. It was Christmas Eve and the feeling of love was in the air that day especially with my sister and Robin. Something my dad didn't quite like for the occasion.
Douglas(walking by Robin and Anna):You think can stop that for a while?
Anna:Why dad? Its Christmas time, it's a time of love.
Douglas:I just don't think it's in good taste for you two to be having your love time while your brother is around.
Anna:Dad, I don't think Roger will have a problem with Robin and I.
Douglas:I'm just saying he might not feel comfortable with it.
Anna:Whatever, dad. Robin and I are going to see a few friends of mine today.
Douglas:Will you be back before 6?
Anna:Yes, dad we should.
Douglas:Is the banner done?
Anna:Yes, Robin and I finished it an hour ago.
Douglas:Alright, you two can go. Be back around 6.
Anna:Alright dad, let's go Rob.
(Anna and Robin exit as Steve enters the room in a jacket and jeans)
Douglas:Where do you think you're going?
Young Steve:I'm probably going to head to Johnny's house.
Douglas:Not until you clean the house.
Young Steve:I really don't have the time
Douglas:If you want to, call him over and ask him to help. I'm sure all he is doing is sitting around reading his comic books and listening to "music".
(Theres a knock on the door)
Douglas:I'll see who it is
(Steve starts dusting the furniture)
Douglas(in another room):Ah, you're just in time.
(Johnny enters the room with Douglas)
Douglas:Look who it is, Steven.
Young Steve:Thank god he's here.
Johnny:You ready, dude?
Douglas:He will be as soon as you sweep the floors, clean the windows and as soon as he vacuums the floor and dusts the furniture you two can leave.
Johnny:You know Mr.Nelson, I would love too but I got to(backing away toward the door)...um...fix the the screen door on the submarine.
Young Steve:I'll give you my Joe DiMaggio rookie card.
Johnny(walking forward):On second thought, my sister can do it.
(They start getting to work. A little bit over an hour later, they finish and head outside)
Johnny:So whats the deal with the money? Are we going to buy some gloves, balls, or bats or something?
Young Steve:I need to go do some shopping today.
Johnny:I thought we were going to get a game started?
Young Steve:Nah, we can do it another day.
Johnny:I don't really want to go shopping on Christmas Eve, Stevie.
Young Steve:Come on just do this for me, it's important.
Johnny:Why exactly are you doing this?
Young Steve:Do I really have to tell you?
Johnny:If you want me to come, you have to tell me what it is.
Young Steve:Fine, I'm buying something for a girl.
Johnny:Who is she?
Young Steve:I can't tell you.
Johnny:Then I won't help.
Young Steve:Fine, it's...(low voice)Dana
Johnny(at the top of his lungs):Dana?!?!??!
Young Steve:Shh....Shh...
Johnny:Are you crazy?
Young Steve:A little
Johnny:Stevie, you can't do this.
Young Steve:What do you mean?
Johnny:She has a boyfriend, and besides why would you want to diss Renee for her?
Young Steve:Oh please, get Renee out of your head, she's definately not interested in me. She even said so the other night.
Johnny:Now, how can you be so sure?
Young Steve(putting hand on his shoulder):Trust me Johnny, I know.
Johnny:Wh-what are you going to get her, exactly?
Young Steve:Thats the problem, I really don't know.
Johnny(putting his hand on his shoulder):Stevie, let's hit the mall.
End Scene 8
Scene 9
(We find Stevie and Johnny at the mall leaning on the wall eating pretzels)
Johnny:We really should get to work on this.
Young Steve:Ok you got a point, I'm just a little nervous.
Johnny:Relax buddy, let's hit the stores.
(They walk into a J.C. Penny's)
Young Steve:What do you think I should buy her? A shirt, some shoes or something?
Johnny:Wow, you're out of touch with what women want. You got to get her some jewelry.
(Steve looks across the room and sees Robin and Anna shopping)
Young Steve:Get down!
(He grabs Johnny by his shirt and they're both hiding behind dresses)
Johnny:What? What's wrong?
Young Steve:Anna's here
Johnny:Your sis?
Young Steve:Yeah
Johnny:So why are we hiding?
Young Steve:She can't know about this.
Johnny:Maybe she can help us.
Young Steve:This is supposed to be secretive.
Johnny:You already told me, what's the worst that can happen telling another?
(He gets up)
Johnny:Anna!
Young Steve:No!
(Anna and Robin turns around)
Anna:Oh, Johnny, how are you?
Johnny:I got your brother over here.
Anna:Is he?
Johnny:Yeah come over here
(She comes over and sees him hiding his body behind a dress.
Anna:You know, Stevie, I always said you look cute as a girl.(She laughs) What brings you here?
Young Steve:Just ugh shopping for...baseball gloves.
Robin:At J.C. Penny's?
Johnny:Stevie, just tell them.
Anna:Tell us what?
Young Steve:Fine, I'm shopping for a girl.
Anna:Dana?
Young Steve:Wha? How did you know?
Anna:I've been saying it for years, you two are going to be married one day.
Young Steve:Can you be kinda quiet about it.
Anna:Why?
(Out of nowhere Dana and David appear out of the corner)
Anna:Hey wait a...
(Johnny puts his hand over Anna's mouth)
Dana:Hey, how are you guys?
Young Steve:We're good, Anna and I and her boyfriend are trying to buy some jewelry for my mom.
David:What brings Johnny?
Young Steve:He's pretty good with Jewelry and stuff like that?
David:How good?
Johnny:They call me the best.
David(leaning over and whispering):Perhaps you should help me later on, I'll give you a call.
Johnny:Okie dokie.
Dana:Well we got to be going, David and I are going out to lunch. We'll see you all later.
(Dana and David leave)
Anna:Wait, I'm confused.
Young Steve:Well, thats the problem, she already has a boyfriend.
Anna:And you're trying to break them up so you can get with her.
Young Steve:I know its kinda stup...
(Anna interrupts him)
Anna:Aww, that's so cute. I'm positive that you're going to get her.
Young Steve:Really?
Anna:Yeah
Young Steve:Can you help me pick out the necklace for her?
Anna:Sure
Young Steve:I'm going to need some help writing a love note for her.
Anna:Robin can do it, he's good with poetry.
Young Steve:Alright let's go then.
(Later we find Steve and Johnny exiting Anna and Robin's vehicle at Dana's house)
Anna:Good luck Stevie
(They drive away)
Young Steve:Alright, what should we do?
Johnny:How bout I sit in the tree and look out for people and you put it at the door.
Young Steve:Good idea, someone should notice it, later.
(Johnny goes to to the tree and watches the street, Steve walks to the door and places it in front of it. Just as he turns to walk away Dana comes around the corner and sees him about to leave)
Dana:Oh hey Stevie
Young Steve:Dana!
Johnny(in tree):Dana? Uh oh
Dana:What brings you here?
Young Steve:I was...uh...
(She looks at the doorway and sees the gift)
Dana:What's this?
(She picks it up and reads the note)
Dana(reading):
I know that you are already taken
But my heart cannot wait no more
For my love has been awaken
So I place this on your door
Not to get you alarmed
But to show my love for you
I hope this gift makes you charmed
For no will break my heart in two.
(Surprised)Stevie, you wrote this?
Young Steve(lowly):Yes
Dana:Why?
Young Steve:Because, Dana...I love you
Dana:You...love me?
Young Steve:Yes, I do
Dana:Uh um...wow I really don't know how to react to this.
Young Steve:Before you say anything let me just state what I want to say. Whats on that note is not what I wrote. I am not a good writer, all of that was written was by my sister's boyfriend who is a really really good poet. However, the truth is, for the last few years I've been living in a self-denial world. Deep down I have came to the realization that I have felt this way about you for the last few years.
When we were younger, it was there. When we were always trying to pull tricks on each other, it was there. When we were fighting, it was there. Hell, even when you got with David...it was there. I can feel it and I can see it in you and I don't really want to sound rude, but you can't deny that.
I know that I look and sound a little crazy, but I'd give up my comic book collection, baseball, and even my baseball cards just to be with you.
(There is a long pause, Dana looks up)
Dana:I...I...I can't do it...
(Steve's face gets long)
Dana:You have to understand, this just cannot work. You've been a great friend to me but the whole idea of me being in a relationship with you is just completely...out of the question. *sigh* I'm sorry Stevie, but it just can't happen. We can keep playing baseball and talk to each other at school but the whole thing of you and I being together and going out on dates just doesn't seem right. David is more of a better fit for me.
He does a lot for me and overall...he's just a really good man. I don't want to take a shot at you but its just...your not the one for me. I don't think it can really happen.
Young Steve:I guess if you feel that way...I can accept it. *sigh* I really have to go, Merry Christmas.
(Steve walks away, as he does Johnny jumps out of the tree and follows him as they leave Dana turns and we see a tear in her eye)
(We go back to Steve and Johnny walking down the steet)
Johnny:I heard what she said.
Young Steve:Yeah
Johnny:I'm sorry
Young Steve:*sigh* There's nothing you could've done about it. It was a decision she had to make. Now she has to live with it. I just wish I hadn't spent all that money on that necklace.
Johnny:Well it's Christmas time you're supposed to give people gifts.
Young Steve:But not when they respond by giving you a swift kick in the head.
Johnny:Look, Dana wants to be your friend. She just doesn't want to be a friend friend.
Young Steve:Why? What exactly is wrong with me? It seems like everybody has a problem with me. My dad thinks I'm not a man, David just laughs at me, his cousin won't date me, and Dana just doesn't want to see me as more than a friend.
Johnny:Stevie, you're going to find someone one day. This is just one bad experience. Remember what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. You may not find a girl now but soon you'll find someone. Just look at Dana as preparation for your next relationship.
Young Steve:I guess you're right.
Johnny:I'm always right, now let's get you home. In about an hour or so, your brother's coming home and you'll feel better.
Older Steve(narrating):Johnny was always kind of there for me. For the first time of my life I actually began to see him as a true friend. The guy always had my back and this was one of the times. He could've said just forget it and stop your complaining like my father would but he actually cared about how I felt on certain things. I guess that's just what true friends do.
(While Older Steve is narrating we see Young Steve arriving home and entering the house when everybody jumps out of nowhere.)
Steve's Family:Surprise!
Douglas:Nevermind, it's just the other boy. Well glad to see you home, son, now can you reset everything? I want to give your brother the best "welcome home" gift anyone can give.
Older Steve(narrating):We set things back up and began to wait on Roger's return. However, as time went on that night there was no sign of him. By 10pm we were all half asleep and by close to 1am we were still up.
Mary:Honey, if you don't mind. I think we should all go to bed.
Douglas(half asleep):Huh? Oh, y-you can go, I think Roger will understand.
(Everybody except Douglas exits the room to bed)
Mary:Are you coming, dear?
Douglas:No, no, I need to stay here for him.
Mary:Alright, good night dear.
Older Steve(narrating):While we were all sleeping, dad stayed up throughout the night 2am, 3am, 4am, 5am, night turned into day and Roger had yet to arrive. It was around 10 or 11 that I had woken up and yet their was still no sign of Roger. That day we all sat there, my dad on the couch, my mother cooking meals, my sister and Robin just laying back, and me reading my comics. Around 8pm my father decided to call the Army the next day and see what the status was on Roger's return...(there is a long pause)
Kevin:Then what happened?
(Steve looks down at his feet and a tear runs down his eye)
Kevin:Wh-what exactly happened?
Older Steve:The next day around 10am we had a knock on our door.
(We return to 1968 where we see Douglas heading to the door he opens it and two men in military outfits are standing at the door)
Douglas:Yes?
1st Man:Are you Douglas Nelson?
Douglas:Yes I am, what is this about?
2nd Man:Mr. Nelson, we are from the U.S. Army.
Douglas:What seems to be the problem?
1st Man:Is your son Roger Nelson?
Douglas:Yes he is, as a matter of fact.
2nd Man:Well Mr. Nelson their appears to be a mistake.
Douglas:What do you mean?
1st Man:Last month we had your son on the list of people returning from Vietnam this Christmas. It appears we have it wrong. Your son will not be returning home.
Douglas(concerned):Well when exactly is he coming back then?
1st Man:He isn't.
Douglas:What do you mean?
2nd Man:Mr. Nelson, 6 months ago there was an attack on one of the regimes your son was in that regime.
Douglas:What are you trying to say?
1st Man:There was a mix up. Mr. Nelson, your son is dead.
(Douglas' face drops and initially he is sadden then angered)
Douglas:Get away from my house and never come around me again.
1st Man:We're very sorry, Mr. Nelson.
Douglas:Sorry? Thats what you are? Sorry? It was your people that told me that my son was coming home after a year and half of fighting for this country. Then you come to my door a day after Christmas and you tell me that there was some kind of mix up and that he's been dead for 6 months but you idiots can't identify his body so you tell someone just like me that there son is dead?
2nd Man:Mr. Nelson, we understand what you're going through right now.
Douglas:Let me ask you, do either of you have kids?
2nd Man:We do not, but we understand what....
Douglas(interupting):Thats my point exactly. You really don't get it. They send to bums like you two whose never had kids, whose probably never suffered as much as I have. I grew up with literally nothing. You two look like you just walked out of the best fancy hotel in New York City.
I spent 3 years in Europe fighting for this god damn country. I came home and married my dream girl and we had 3 beautiful children. I sent my son over to Vietnam to help repay the country for the good it's done for me and in response they lie to me and get my son killed. I never want to see any of your dispicable...(he breaks down, falls to his knees and begins to cry. The two Army Men and Mary try to comfort him).
Older Steve(narrating):For the first time in my life...the world looked less like a place of fun, joy, and life but as a cruel place. For the first time in my life I saw my father, who was probably the strongest man I've ever known, fall to pieces within seconds. The harsh reality was there. I had lost Dana, my brother, and my faith in the world. It felt as if the sun had just gone down on me.
(We return to 2008)
Kevin:I'm...I'm sorry.
Steve:There is nothing you can really do about it. It is just something that happened
(He gets up and pours a cup of orange juice. As he does this Patricia, Ben, and Roger enter)
Ben:Hey we're back!
Steve:Ah welcome home.
Patricia:Did you two have fun today?
Kevin:It was interesting.
Steve:Well what are we waiting on lets get dinner ready and watch James Stewart.
Patricia:Have you heard from mom?
Steve:Yeah she said she'll be home tomorrow and she has a big surprise.
Patricia:I can't wait
End Scene 9
Scene 10
(Its Christmas morning, we find everyone downstairs including Roger's Girlfriend and Ben's wife and son unwrapping presents)
Kevin:Awesome, a new Kobe jersey!
(Steve walks down stairs in a robe with a cup of orange juice)
Steve:Ahh, did you all love your gifts?
(They nod there heads yes)
Steve:Only the best for my children and grandchildren.
Kevin:Where's your gift, Grandpa?
Steve:My gift is coming soon.
(Theres a knock on the door)
(Steve opens the door where Johnny, now 54, enters)
Steve:Ah Johnny boy!
Johnny:Stevie, my friend, how is the family?
Steve:We're doing good, come on in.
(Behind him Madeline enters)
Steve:Maddy, how have you been?
Madeline:I've been alright, Johnny and I just had breakfast and the family is coming over around 3.
Steve:Thats good, how is your boy?
Johnny:He is doing fine, just hired by ESPN to cover baseball. He also got to meet Robert Lysander.
Steve:The Pitcher?
Johnny:Yeah, he told me that he'll be giving me my old card of Robert signed by him. I'm pretty excited. You got your whole family around?
Steve:Yup, including my daughter and grandson
Johnny:Ah, let me see everyone.
(Steve, Johnny, and Madeline walk into the Living Room)
Steve:Patricia, you remember Johnny?
Patricia:Oh Johnny, how has life treated you?
Johnny:Its been alright, had its ups and downs.
Patricia:How has Joe been?
Johnny:Journalism has gone well for him, I was hoping he'd stick to baseball but its his choice and so far its been a good one.
Patricia:Thats good to hear. Oh Madeline, you still look great.
Madeline:Thank you, I never wanted to get old but things just happen but I still look great.
Johnny:Ah, is this your boy(pointing at Kevin).
Patricia:Yes, it is. Kevin introduce yourself to Mr.Davis.
Kevin:Hi, Mr. Davis, I'm Kevin, Kevin Johnson.
Johnny:Pleased to meet you and please call me Johnny.
(Kevin gets a surprised look. There is another knock on the door)
Patricia:I'll get it
(She goes to get it)
Patricia(from another room):Oh yes! Now the party can begin!
(Kevin looks over where Patricia has entered with a now-58 year old Anna and 60 year old Robin)
Patricia:Oh Aunt Anna, how have you been all this time?
Anna:Still kickin' and enjoyin life.
Patricia:Uncle Robin, are you still doing concerts?
Robin:You betcha, your aunt and I recorded an album for Valentine's Day. Its scheduled to be released next month. We're doing covers of a few good love songs and recorded one I wrote called Love Over Time. It's about our relationship from around '68 to now.
Patricia:Oh thats beautiful, Uncle Robin. Have you had a chance to meet my son, Kevin?
Robin:Bring him over.
(Kevin enters the room)
Patricia:Kevin, this is your Uncle Robin and Aunt Anna. They're...
Kevin:Musicians, Grandpa told me about them. He also told me that Robin taught him how to play Guitar.
Robin:Is very much true.
Kevin:Maybe you can teach me sometime. Are you going to be in L.A. anytime soon?
Robin:I'll be promoting on the West Coast for the album next month. I'll stop by and help you out.
Kevin:Awesome, I mean thank you.
(A few hours pass by and we find everyone together at the dinner table)
Steve:Has everyone enjoyed their Christmas?
(All nod their heads)
Steve:Well whenever your mother or in some cases grandmother arrives we can start dinner.
(Theres a knock on the door)
Steve:Speak of the devil, herself.
(He goes to answer)
Patricia:Kevin, have you enjoyed it.
Kevin:I guess, I just..
Patricia:Just, what?
Kevin:I really miss dad, this is the 2nd Christmas without him
(Steve and his wife re-enter the room)
Steve:Patricia, Kevin, we have a surprise for you.
(Behind them enters Tyler Johnson, Kevin's father and Patricia's husband wearing his uniform)
Kevin:Dad!
Patricia:Tyler!
(They go over and embrace him)
Tyler:I am glad to see you both again.
Patricia:What exactly happened, I thought they weren't allowing you to come home?
Tyler:Well I appealed to the commanding officer who appealed to the President who agreed to allow me to come here for Christmas to be with all of you.
Kevin:How long will you staying this time?
Tyler:At least for 6 weeks.
Kevin(a little dissapointed):Oh
Tyler:Don't feel bad, my son, I will make sure I'd be back for your birthday in the summer and for Christmas. Instead of being upset for the short term we should celebrate us being together again.
(After dinner we find everyone in the living room watching TV. Steve heads out into the kitchen and Kevin follows him)
Kevin:Grandpa?
Steve:Yes?
Kevin:I hope you don't mind, but how did everything turned out.
Steve(narrating over clips of what he is saying):Christmas 1968 changed a lot of us forever. Initially, Anna and Robin were going to split up because they didn't want to upset my father any more. However, as you can see they didn't for my father would begin to accept the relationship and Robin as his son-in-law(clips of Anna, Robin, and Douglas talking and Douglas shaking his hand). In 1970, they would finally marry. My father, himself would experience a political change.
After years of vouching for the war, my father's tune began to change as he began speaking out against the war and even attended a few anti-war rallies. Later he would tell me that losing Roger wasn't worth it when it came to this war. He and my mother would soon leave New York for Florida where they spent the rest of their lives, although he moved back to New York after my mother's death in 1993. He spent the final years of his life living next door until his death four years ago.
Johnny and Madeline would stay together throughout High School and would marry in '75. From there they had one son, Joe and two twin daughters, Kay and May. Johnny wanted to play Professional Baseball but a knee injury forced him to settle for being a Little League coach and Manager of our alma mater's baseball team. The baseball games, itself, would come to an end by '72. Our final daily game was our first night game.
With permission from the local minor league team at the time, we were allowed to play our final game at their stadium at night. The local ABC affiliate was told of our story and offered to televise our game locally and have highlights of it on Wide World of Sports. In our final game we knocked off Midsummer 4-3. It was one of the saddest days of my life.
Kevin:What ever happened with you and Dana
Steve(narrating as his wife enters the room):Well, a few days after rejecting me she apoligized to me. David and her would break up a few months later and officially on Valentine's Day 1969, her and I would get together. We would graduate high school together and in 1973, we had our first child, a beautiful girl named Patricia. A few years later our son Ben and in 1986, your uncle Roger, named for my brother was born. Close to 40 years later her and I are still together(he puts his arm around his wife, who is now revealed to be Dana) and our family is united.
(Steve and Dana turn and kiss as Kevin gets a smile on his face. Robin enters the room)
Robin:Hey Stevie, I was just thinking, maybe for the Holidays, me, you, Anna, and Dana can do a song for everybody.
Steve:I'm all for it, how about you, Dear?
Dana:I'd love too
(Steve and Dana enter the living room as it ends they perform Jingle Bells for the rest of the family)

Seasonal Stories:Midsummer Nightmare
Scene 1A
(Int: House of Banks)
Time: July 1954
Edward: Hannah, dear, may you please hurry?
Hannah: I'm coming father, go complain about William
Edward: Young William has already left the house
Hannah: Where did he go?
Edward: He went out to the Red Sox game
Hannah: Why do I have to go?
Edward: Because Governor Quince wants to meet you, he and I both have a surprise for you
Hannah: This better not be another ticket to the ballet. I'm so bored with that
Edward: Oh no, you will love this gift
(She walks down stairs and goes up to him)
Hannah: Can you tell me what it is now?
Edward: Nope
(They drive down the road)
Edward: I once knew a man from
Hannah: Oh dad, not now
Edward (laughing):My apologies Hannah
(They pull into to the front of the house and exit)
(Hannah and Edward walk towards the back of the house where they find the Governor Bill Quince in a pool)
Bill: Why good afternoon, Edward
Edward: Good afternoon to you too, sir
Bill: This must be your daughter, Hannah
(He kisses her hand)
Bill: How are you fair lady?
Hannah: Quite splendid, you have a very beautiful place
Bill: Do you dream of ever living here
Hannah: A place like this how could I ever deny?
(Suddenly Donald, a tall dark haired man walks out in a robe)
Donald: Father may I ask if…oh I see we have company
Bill: Yes Donald this is Edward Banks, he and I are discussing a merger between our two companies
Donald (eyes turning toward Hannah): And who might this be?
Hannah (with a spark in her eyes): My name is Hannah
Donald: Well well well, how do you do, Miss Banks?
Hannah: Fairly well
Donald: Would you like to take a walk with me
Hannah: To where?
Donald: The Beach, of course
Hannah: You have your own beach, too?
Donald: Yes, don't believe me? Come out and see
(They walk outside together hand in hand)
Bill: Now Mr. Banks about our business deal, I see it working out so far
Edward: Yes indeed, I feel that BOTH deals were worked out perfectly. She seems to like him
Bill: How can she not, Donald is a fine upstart citizen
Edward: Where did you say he went to?
Bill: Harvard, 5 years schooling he was a letterman on the Varsity Football team and member of The Future Leaders of America society. The way I see it, one day he'll be the heir to both our companies. Does your daughter have plans on attending college?
Edward: No, she was a little upset about her break-up with another young man
Bill: May I ask who he may be?
Edward: Eh, just another waste of sperm he wants to become a baseball player but he'll burn out and wind up drinking at bars til
Bill: What exactly happened to them?
Edward: He got injured last season and the doctors told him he may never play again and he flipped out on her and I gave him the business and that was the end of him. My son, however, continues to hang around with the failure of a human being
Bill: Ah yes, where is young William?
Edward: The Red Sox game they play the Yankees today and that game means the world to William.
Bill: Chances if the merger goes through we can get Young William to run the company with Donald?
Edward: Slim, his heads in the clouds and he can careless about business but more about writing and baseball. So what's it like to be Governor?
Bill: Fantastic you rule over people and you know a lot of people.
Edward: Any chance I can be part of your cabinet if you become President?
Bill: It'll be a while, I'd hate to run against Eisenhower maybe I can be on the Vice President ticket but Nixon seems to have that locked so it'll be a while 1960 seems like the year for me. How would Vice President Banks sound?
Edward: I love it!
(Donald and Hannah return)
Edward: Hey you two look liked you had fun, didn't build a sandcastle did you, Donald?
Donald (laughing): Oh we just took a walk around the beach
Edward: Well that's fantastic, say how about you, Donald and you, Governor come by our house for a dinner party tomorrow?
Bill: Sure, I'd love too
Hannah: I would love it too
(Bill and Edward wink at one another and Hannah and Edward leave)
(Hours later we return to their home where we find that William has also returned)
William: Hello father, sister, how was the meeting
Hannah: He was fantastic…I mean it was splendid
Edward: Hannah found a new more intelligent gentleman
Hannah: His name is Donald, and he is amazing, he's coming over tomorrow, with his father. Oh I cannot wait
(She runs upstairs)
William: Wow, so how much did you pay for this guy, dad?
Edward: Not a dime, it was the idea of me and Governor Quince, we believe they would make a fantastic couple and hopefully I can marry them before the summer is over
William: Before it's over, this is insane dad they just met
Edward: Its love at first sight, William something you wouldn't really understand
William: What does that mean?
Edward: Well Will, you're 16 years old and you've never had a real relationship to last longer than 3 months you're batting .000 at the moment
William: Because relationships are hard to build. What about you and mother?
Edward: We just went our separate ways it was a mistake anyways
William: What was, getting with her or giving birth to us?
Edward: Now don't throw this at me
William: You literally left her for the dead, and then when she does die, you take us in. Where were you when I was 7 years old and getting abused in school?
Edward: Look I had no idea she had children, ok? Now just drop it, your sister is happy, I'm happy and you're happy
William: How can I be happy when my father is selling off my sister just for financial gain
Edward: This is not about money, William it's about love and seeing my daughter happy
William: She wasn't happy for half her life, why must you come in the 2nd half and try to when she is perfectly capable of doing it, herself?
Edward: She is a woman, just by being one she's naturally miserable
William: You're ridiculous
Edward: You're the one who is being ridiculous, William, your sister is happy and you throw these bombs at me about how I was never there for her growing up and about how I'm supposedly playing a game with her
William: Just never mind, I just know there's a better guy out there for her, and his name is Robert Lysander.
Edward: Oh come on, William, that is the past and Mrs. Hannah Quince is the future
William: I'll wait until tomorrow to judge this man, but I'd like to see him before he enters my family.
Edward: Just wait til tomorrow and you'll see not a future of dirt and disaster but of gold and hearts
William: We'll see
(End Scene 1A)
Scene 1B
(Int: O'Reilly's Ice Cream Shop)
(We find Hannah and Mary sitting at a table)
Hannah: Oh Mary, I am so excited
Mary: As I can tell, what did the Red Sox win yesterday?
Hannah: I don't know but I know this…ready to hear it? I'm…in…LOVE!
Mary (a little shocked): Oh, um, who is the lucky guy?
Hannah: His name is Donald Quince and he is the son of the Governor, I have hit the jackpot with this one.
Mary: How good is he?
Hannah: Kissing? Haven't kissed him yet all I know is he's a Harvard alum and may be a future President one day, he met Eisenhower…EISENHOWER!
Mary: Sounds like a good deal o me when are you going to see him again?
Hannah: Tonight, he is coming to my father's dinner party. You may come over if you want
Mary: Probably not, I'm going to a family outing tonight we're all going to see the Red Sox play
Hannah: Oh, how is Robert doing lately (in a lower tone)?
Mary: He doesn't really say or do much. He's been sitting in the back yard practicing his pitching
Hannah: Has any teams contacted him yet?
Mary: Nope, he talked about possibly taking a train to the
Hannah: Oh, well I hope he succeeds I mean he's a great pitcher
Mary: Every pitcher needs a catcher
Hannah (slightly offended) What's that supposed to mean?
Mary: Nothing, I'm just saying…
Hannah: Look Mary, you don't always have to take shots at me, I know when you're talking about me and what me and Robert had is over, Donald is the future for me.
Mary: Whatever, Hannah, I'm going mother said to be back at 2, you have fun at your dinner party
Hannah: I will
Mary: I hope you do
(We jump to later that night where we see a kitchen table with 6 chairs. Edward enters wearing a white tuxedo)
Edward: Alright, everybody, places, Heinz is the food finished?
Heinz: Its is almost finished sir, I will bring it out in a few minutes
Edward: Well hurry it up, will ya? The guests of honor are on their way. Hannah! William! Get down here!
(William walks down in a black shirt and pants with a Red Sox cap on)
Edward: Get that dirty cap off!
William: It's just a cap, dad, I wear it all the time
Edward: Nonetheless this is a formal dinner and a baseball cap isn't formal
William (sarcastically): Oh that's right you don't want to look bad in front of your boyfriends
Edward: Don't give me that pop, I can disown you easily and you won't make a dime in life
William: Whatever you say, dad
(He takes off his hat)
(The door bell rings)
Edward: Ah that must be them!
(He answers the door where he finds Governor Quince and Donald wearing matching dark tuxedos)
Edward: Ah come in, Gentlemen. Donald, this my son, William
(They shake hands)
Donald: How do you do, Will?
William: I'm alright I guess, how are you?
Donald: Quite fantastic
Edward: Sit down, Gentlemen; the lady of honor shall be down in a minute
(Donald sits down at the Northwest part of the table while Governor Quince sits at the west side, and William sits across from Donald)
William: So Donald, I hear you're a Harvard man
Donald: 5 years one of the best times of my life learning from fine professors? What are your college ambitions, William?
William: Well I'm a bit of a writer, I don't think colleges like my type they prefer business minded people and political people. But if I had to pick maybe…Yale or
(Donald slightly frowns)
Edward: My apologies, Donald, the young man was only kidding
Donald: Its alright he's just saying he is inferior to my education
(Hannah walks down stairs in her white dress)
Edward: Why isn't it my daughter, take a seat next to Donald
(She does)
Edward: I'd like to take this time to make an announcement
Bill: Allow me to make it, Ed…at
Donald: This is fantastic news father
Bill: Yes and with that I'd like to name you, Donald as the New President of Quince and Banks
Edward: You mean Banks and Quince?
Bill: Oh it doesn't matter we can work something out go for a neutral name…how does B&E sound?
Edward: E&B would sound better
Bill: Oh we'll figure something out, its business after all we should solve this by the end of the week.
(Heinz walks into the room)
Heinz: Dinner is served, Master Banks
Edward: Why thank you, Heinz. Heinz this is Governor Quince and his son, Donald
Heinz (shakes their hands): Pleased to meet you sirs
Bill (a bit hesitatant): Nice to meet you too
(Heinz exits the room)
(They all begin to eat)
William: So Donald, how old are you again?
Donald: 24, I will turn 25 in March
William: That's a little old, don't you think?
Donald: For what?
William: To be hanging around kids like us. I'm 16 and my sister is 18 and too young to be hanging around Grandpa Ed
Edward: William, one more remark and I'm going dismiss you from the premises
William: Just relax dad, I'm only kidding
Donald: Let the boy have his fun, he may be a tad annoying to you but he is only young
Edward: Were you ever like that, Donald?
Donald: Oh heavens no, I was quite respectful as a child. I believe that the elders paved the way for my generation and I should respect that
Hannah: You're such a gentleman
William: I question the "man" part
Edward: Alright William you're out of line, go upstairs now
William: Whatever, I'll talk to you later Donnie
(He heads upstairs)
Edward: My apologies to you, Donald, William is a tad rude, it comes from the people he hangs around, degenerates if I might call them
Donald: Its okay, honest he should hang around me and some of my chums at the Cambridge Country Club, with the right crowd he can develop into the right kind of person.
Edward: Its okay, Donald I'd like to save you the hassle, in all sheer honesty, there's nothing saving the boy at this point. My only hope is that Father McKenzie can save his moral soul through prayer to the lord above.
Bill: It looks like he might need more than prayer from the looks of it
Edward (chuckling): Oh he needs a miracle or two
(They all share a laugh)
Donald: If you don't mind, may I and Hannah step outside for a moment?
Edward: Go ahead, Donald
(Donald and Hannah head outside)
Edward: I do believe our plan is working
Bill: It's that damn boy of yours who is really hurting it, he doesn't seem to like Donald well, why is that?
Edward: He doesn't trust him or us; I see that we should try to get him out of the picture before he interferes with our plans?
Bill: How do you plan on this?
Edward: Boarding school of course send him off to
Bill: Good idea, I'll pay the money
Edward: And I'll talk to Father McKenzie about Catholic boarding schools we can send him too
Bill: Brilliant, what about wedding plans?
Edward: I'm hoping it is an immediate yes, otherwise we may be looking at a long term build and I would love to see this "dating" portion done as fast as it can
(Meanwhile outside we find Hannah and Donald sitting on the steps of her front porch)
Hannah: Isn't it a beautiful night, Donald?
Donald: Yes it is most definitely just like you, beautiful
(Hannah slightly blushes and smiles)
Donald: Do you think this is going to be a great summer
Hannah: Most certainly
Donald: I agree…especially if you and I see it out together
Hannah: Are you saying what I think you are
(He grabs her hands)
Donald: Hannah, I want to go out with you, be your boyfriend and you be my girlfriend and maybe one day, marriage. How about it?
Hannah: I accept
Donald: Then let us be together
(They kiss)
(We cut back inside of the house)
Bill: So who won the Red Sox game yesterday?
Edward: I really don't know
Bill: Well find out
Edward: The papers didn't come this morning and William never said anything about it
Bill: Hopefully we pulled it off it means a lot to the standings especially if we want to get back into the World Series
Edward: Most definitely
(Hannah and Donald walk in)
Hannah: Dad, Governor, Donald and I have a very important announcement
Edward: What is it, my dear?
Donald: Hannah and I are officially together we just made it official two minutes ago
Bill: Why this is fantastic, Donald
(William walks downstairs)
William: Whats going on?
Hannah: Donald and I are together, isn't it great?
William (a tad concerned with a smear look towards Edward): Oh, but you two just met
Hannah: Oh but it feels like I've known him for years. Why is there something wrong?
William: No, I'm happy for you two this is just out of nowhere
Hannah: Oh I know but its love at first sight
William: Well good luck to you two
Donald: Come on lets head back out and you can give me a tour of your home
(They exit along with William who heads back upstairs)
Edward: Where are you going, my son?
William: I'm going to bed I am tired
Edward: Alright goodnight then
(William exits)
Edward: Well Governor it seems to me that plans are going well so far
Bill: Yes indeed Mr. Banks and the future can only get brighter we just have to get rid of that son of yours
Edward: As we will, I will talk to Father McKenzie tomorrow
Scene 2A
(We find Hannah sitting at a cafe with Mary)
Mary:How did it go last night?
Hannah:It was great we're together now
Mary(a little dissapointed):Oh
Hannah:You could at least sound happy for me
Mary:I am its just I feel bad for some parties
Hannah:Is this about Robert?
Mary(sighing):Yes
Hannah:I'm sure he's alright without me, I mean he'll find somebody
Mary:You two were great together, it was almost like a dream couple, the small town guy who dreams of fame and the wealthy lady who has a heart of gold
Hannah:I know that it was fun at times, but...its the past and Donald is my future, I can't do anything about it, we're in love and Robert's going to have to find somebody else to be with. Its Boston, theres a lot of girls out there
Mary:I know, its just I see him, miserable without you and he's dying inside I can tell
Hannah:He'll come around eventually, I just know it. For now, Donald plans on taking me to an Opera show tomorrow night and it'll be fantastic
Mary(lower tone):I hope so
(Meanwhile we find William throwing the baseball at a friend's house with the radio blaring)
William's Friend:What do you got going tomorrow?
William:Nothing, really
William's Friend:Good, because we got a ball game at John Adams Park
William:Who do we got?
William's Friend:A bunch of guys from Cambridge is coming over to play us
William:Cambridge?
William's Friend:Yeah, thats where Harvard is
William:How old are these guys?
William's Friend:Some are in the mid-20's, some are still in High School, and the rest actually go to Harvard its basically them, their alumni, and the future
William:Thats wheres my sister's boyfriend went to
William's Friend:Whose her boyfriend
William:Donald Quince, he's the governor's son
William's Friend:Damn, your sister sure hit a home run with this one
William:I guess, the whole thing just seems forced to me, one of my father's rediculous agendas to wreck our lives. She barely knows the guy, hell I barely know him.
William's Friend:Maybe you should hang out with them this week, get to know him better, he might be in your family one day and you won't even know him
William:I guess I should
Radio Announcer:After nearly a year of searching police have found the body of Helena Grimes. Helena Grimes was reported missing by her family a year ago. Her body was found washed ashore. She had been last seen driving to a friends house. She made no mention of who the friend was and at the moment, her 1947 Model T has not been found. Police believe that she may have drowned, committed suicide or was possibly murdered. We will give you and update when more news arises...now back to regular programming.
William's Friend:Damn shame about the girl
William:You know her?
William's Friend:No, but I've been paying attention to this case for a while now. Apparently she had graduated from Radcliffe College and vanished one night
William:I'm assuming no leads?
William's Friend:Very much so, never found anything vanished without a trace
William:What do you think it was?
William's Friend:Well she made no mention where she was going. Her parents said she left out of the blue and never returned. I think it had to be suicide because she knew something was up or else she would've never left. My theory is she drove the car of a cliff and that was it.
William:Yeah but how could she be found without the car?
William's Friend:Well maybe she survived initially and got out of the car
William:I don't know, lets just focus on tomorrows game, those Harvard guys are really good at baseball from what I hear
William's Friend:Alright
End Scene 2A
Scene 2B
(We find Edward sitting in the kitchen with Father McKenzie)
Father McKenzie:What exactly have you called me here for?
Edward:Well Father, I may need you for a wedding
Father McKenzie:Ah yes the joining of two souls? Are you getting married, yourself, Edward?
Edward:Oh father, one could only wish but I'm still single, its my daughter
Father McKenzie:Ah yes, young Hannah, who is the lucky fellow?
Edward:He is Donald Quince, the son of Governor Bill Quince
Father McKenzie:My goodness, my son this I have to say is huge for you and her
Edward:Yes indeed, you have to meet the young man I feel he has great ambitions and will one day be a great leader for this country
Father McKenzie:If he's anything like his father I guarantee it. I say Bill Quince has been a blessing for this state. If anything this wedding would benefit all. What date do you have planned?
Edward:Somewhere between September and November
Father McKenzie:Hasty much?
Edward:We're all in that much support of it all
Father McKenzie:Well you'll have to give me an official date, until then heres to a successful future
(They raise glasses)
Both:Amen
(Suddenly William walks down wearing a pair of pants, a t-shirt, and a baseball cap)
Father McKenzie:Ah young William, how do you fare at this time
William:Quite well father I'm just on my way to a baseball game...what are you two discussing?
Father McKenzie:Wed(he is interrupted by Edward)
Edward:Business, Edward you wouldn't quite understand
William:Well that may very well be so I'll guess I'll see you Sunday, father
Father McKenzie:Have a wonderful day young William
(William exits)
Edward:Father, about the boy....
Father McKenzie:Yes?
Edward:I feel that the current school system may be corrupting Young William so I feel it is best to send him off to a boarding school of sorts...would you know of any Catholic boarding schools?
Father McKenzie:There is always Boston Catholic School...
Edward:No I mean farther away those friends of his have corrupted his mind
Father McKenzie:How far are we talking?
Edward:Well either cross country or out of the country
Father McKenzie:There is Notre Dame du lac over in Paris. It costs a large sum of money and if its too much I could help you pay for it
Edward:Oh no, nothing is too much father
Father McKenzie:I'll get ahold of Father Dupree he is heading back over to France this month and he can send a message to the headmaster informing him of a new enrolllment
Edward:Brilliant, we'll send him over in September
Father McKenzie:What about the wedding?
Edward:Oh, he don't want to go, he's not that well at weddings, very emotional
Father McKenzie:I see, well to each his own I suppose though I couldn't blame him, weddings are a huge step in life
(A knock is at the door, Heinz answers and Donald enters)
Edward:Ah, hello Donald
Donald:Mr.Banks, how are you on this fine evening
Edward:Quite splendid, Donald this is Father McKenzie
(They shake hands)
Father McKenzie:Pleased to meet you Young Quince
Donald:Pleased to make your acquaintance Father...where is my fair lady at?
Edward:She is on her way down lets all just sit here and have a talk
Father McKenzie:So Mr.Banks tells me about you and Ms.Banks getting married
Donald:Yes, we plan on to in the fall
Father McKenzie:Wonderful, where do you plan on taking her to for the honeymoon?
Donald:Oh probably somewhere in England or perhaps New York City
Father McKenzie:Where are you two heading to tonight?
Donald:The opera its quite lovely
(Hannah comes down the stairs)
Donald:Ah my beautiful sweet sweet Hannah, the opera will start in 30 minutes so we must hurry the car is running and we must get going
(They engage arm and arm and walk out the door)
Father McKenzie:Oh Hannah...
(Before he can say another word Edward puts his hand over Father McKenzie's mouth)
Father McKenzie:What was that for?
Edward:She doesn't know about the wedding arrangements
Father McKenzie:What do you mean she doesn't know
Edward:He hasn't quite proposed, yet
Father McKenzie:Ah I see well then the young man must make it fast no lady wants to haste a wedding, ah well I'll see you Sunday, Ed. Until then may God bless you, and your family
(He exits the house)
(Hours later we find both baseball teams sitting at the park having a discussion)
Harvard Grad 1:Quite a good game you all played today
William's Friend:Why thank you, um any chance we can have a rematch anytime soon?
Harvard Grad:Well, we can face off again next month perhaps
William:So you graduated from Harvard?
Harvard Grad:Oh yes I was in the Class of 1952 played football and baseball though this is more of my specialty
William's Friend:Say, William isn't your sis dating a Harvard grad?
Harvard Grad:Oh, who is the fellow, I may know him
William:Donald Quince
Harvard Grad:Ha! I feel sorry for the young girl
William:What do ya mean?
Harvard Grad:She's dating a complete embesol, the guys a total joke
William:What do you mean?
Harvard Grad:He was a loser and a complete lunatic...what did he tell you?
William:He was a letterman at Harvard and he had been there for 5 years
(3 Harvard Grads laugh out loud)
Harvard Grad:Are you kidding me? THE Donald Quince that was our 4th string Quarterback and got cut because he was "too good" to practice and as for 5 years? Thats five more years of work than he actually did at Harvard one of those, "My daddy's rich so I do what I want" types. A Yale professor could easily outsmart the bastard. He's a liar, a cheat, and a coward if you ask me
(A horn blows)
Harvard Grad:Well thats our driver we better be heading back to Cambridge if you are interested in applying to Harvard I can give you a pass to come visit campus sometime
William:Sure
Harvard Grad:Welp got to go hope to see you all next month
William:Good day and thank you
(The Harvard team leaves)
William's Friend:What did you take that for?
William:Suddenly I think this Midsummer Dream of my father may turn into his worst nightmare. Tomorrow I head over to Cambridge
William's Friend:You're not serious about this, are you?
William:I am a dead serious, I think Donald has some explaining to do
End Scene 2B
Scene 3A
(We find that William has arrived back to the house he opens to the door and when he turns to shut it he bumps into Donald)
Donald:Well hello William
William:Good evening, Donnie
Donald:Ahem...I prefer Donald, its my real name
William:I apoligies Donald, since your going to be in the family and all how about Saturday, you and me head over to that country club you talked about and we can get to know each other better because I'd hate for us to be estranged going into the wedding
Donald:Ah, so you know too well I guess we should get to know each other. Saturday it is...have you ever gone horseback riding?
William:Few times
Donald:Well we can get some horses and have ourselves a little bit of a race and play some chess with some of my fellow chums
William:Welp, I accept...say Donald what position did you play in football?
Donald:Quarterback, I ran the offense quite well
William:Interesting, so Saturday then?
Donald:Yes indeed
(Donald exits)
Edward:Nice to see you are accepting him as a brother-in-law
William:Welp you can't turn your back on family
Edward:Oh yes you can quite easily
(The next day we find William in Cambridge he walks into the doors of the University he is greeted at the door by a member of the Board of Trustees)
Member of the Board:Well hello, young man, are you interested in applying to Harvard?
William:I wouldn't really mind it but first I'd like to speak to Coach Gaines about something first
Member of the Board:Ah, a football man well if you're looking for scholarships for atheletics right here isn't the place for you
William:Actually I'd like to probably walk on the team as a secondary activity and I'd like to ask about the offense
Member of the Board:Third office down the hall, he shouldn't be busy due to it being the offseason
(He walks down the hallway and knocks on the Coach's door)
Coach Gaines:Come in
(He enters)
Coach Gaines:Your name and why you're here?
William:I'm William Banks and I'm here to ask about Donald Quince
Coach Gaines:Mr.Quince was a fine young athelete and letterman here at Harvard. He could've gone pro but declined to so he can focus on a political career. Now if you may shut the door(William shuts it)the truth is Quince was a bum. He never tried to learn the offense, he no showed practices and the injury is blasphamous. If you want more info on him I suggest talking to Professor Daugherty. He was fired a year ago for certain reasons
William:Where can I find him?
Coach Gaines:He's been hiding for protection purposes try looking in Springfield he's under the alias Roger King. He will tell you everything
William:When does the next train leave for Springfield?
Coach Gaines:In about half an hour
William:Could I get some money for the train?
Coach Gaines:Here take my school pass, it gives you free access to the train. You can keep it til you return to Cambridge. I hope you are able to expose that Donald Quince for who he really is
William:Alright thank you, Coach. Good luck against Yale
Coach Gaines:We'll need it
(William exits and heads back to the front hall where he goes to the Board of Trustees office)
William:Could I use your phone?
Member of the Board:Sure
(William takes the phone and calls his father)
Edward:Hello?
William:Father, this is William, I am calling to tell you that I won't be coming home tonight because I am staying overnight with a friend of Donald's. Harvard is fantastic and they say I have a really good shot of making it here
Edward(enthusiastic):That is fantastic, William. Well I hope to see you back here by Saturday night, we're having a big party at the Governor's Mansion at Nantucket. Donald is expected to make a big announcement
William:Sounds great, dad, me and Donald have hit it off real well so far
Edward:Well thats great, well I'll see you whenever. I'll talk to you when you arrive home
William:Alright bye dad
(They hang up)
Member of the Board:So are you thinking of applying here?
William:Nah, New Haven looks alot better but thanks for the phone
(He walks away)
Member of the Board:...Smartass
(William leaves the school)
End Scene 3A
Scene 3B
(We are at the home of Father McKenzie)
Father McKenzie:Emily, dear, you love weddings right?
Emily:Very much so
Father McKenzie:Well prepare for this one. You know Brother Banks, right?
Emily(annoyed):I know him too much
Father McKenzie:Well his daughter is getting married to the Governor's son
Emily(happy):Thats beautiful, when is it?
Father McKenzie:The fall
Emily:When exactly?
Father McKenzie:They don't know yet
Emily:Ah when did they get together
Father McKenzie:This week
Emily:This week? Doesn't that seem a tad hasty?
Father McKenzie:Well sort of I guess
Emily:Thomas, you know as well as I do the only kind of marriage is pure. Now this doesn't sound like true love to me it just seems to me likes its almost a business deal simular to tha merger you were telling me about earlier between Mr. Banks' company and Governor Quince's company. Perhaps I should talk to Hannah about it on Sunday morning before or after church. Marriage is a big step in a girls life and the book says the only pure marriage is real love.
Father McKenzie:I'm not going to condemn you but I feel that this marriage is for the greater good of all parties involved and is a sign from the Lord himself.
Emily:I'd just hate for the girl to live in a life of lust and sin
Father McKenzie:Well we will see
(He walks away, meanwhile in Springfield we find that William has arrived. He walks off the train and sees a phone book he looks in the directory for Roger King but doesn't find him. He goes to various businesses asking about King but does not get an answer. After a while it turns night and he heads over to a motel. He arrives at the front desk)
William:I'd like to get a room
Clerk:Well that'll be about 25 dollars
William:I only got 20
Clerk:Tough luck pal
(As William walks away to leave a voice calls him back)
The Voice:Wait a second
(He turns around to find an aging man in a hat with a long beard. The man walks over to William)
The Man:Here son, the five extra dollars. You don't have to pay me back just helping out a fellow American in need
(They give the money to the Clerk. The Clerk hands William the key. William and the Clerk exit the motel lobby)
William:Gee thanks Mr.?
The Man:King, Roger King
William:Roger King??!!??!
Roger:Yes, that is my name
William:Professor, thank god I found you
Roger:I beg your pardon?
William:Professor Daugherty, you used to teach at Harvard
Roger:How did you know who I was?
William:Coach Gaines told me about you he says that you have the answers I'm looking for
Roger:About?
William:Donald Quince
(Roger, stunned looks around)
Roger:Come into my room I can only tell you this stuff in private
(They go into his room. Roger sits on a chair)
Roger:Shut that door and close the blinds
(William does as he says)
Roger:Now what do you need to know
William:Anything, did he really finish top of his class?
Roger:Lies the man don't know much about anything. He was a slacker, and a cheater. I caught him cheating on his exam and when the board of directors told me not to fail him I refused and was fired
William:So he is a fake
Roger:Very much so, why do you want to know all of this?
William:Well he just got with my sister recently
Roger:How recent?
William:A few days ago
Roger:Oh my, we need to act at once
William:Why do you say that?
Roger:Your sister may be in danger
William:What do you mean?
Roger:Donald may come off as the Gentleman type but deep down he is a sociopath. He was in my class and all he can write about was death, murder, and violence. When I went to talk to him about this he said he felt murder could be a fun and suspenseful activity. I also came across a secret journal of his where he talks about a slaughter of millions of people simular to the Holocaust. The things I read in the journal disturbed me and I fear for your sister's life if she hits the wrong nerve. When I had confronted Donald on his writings he was initially calm but snapped when I told him I would report him to the Headmaster. He shoved me against a wall, grabbed a knife out of my desk and held it to my throat. I managed to kick him off of me and escaped. When I told the Headmaster he told me to leave. The next day I got a phone call saying I was dismissed and the school put a restraining order against me. Donald is very dangerous and we got to help your sister some how
William:Were there any other girls?
Roger:There was one girl I read in his journal by the name of "Helena". He mentions that she is the best thing ever to happen to him and another page that I was disturbed by that said she couldn't live without him
William:Any other information on her?
Roger:Nope, I just hope nothing had happened to the girl. She really don't know what she got herself involved into
William:I need you to come with Cambridge with me tomorrow
Roger:I...I can't
William:Look you want to expose Quince right?
Roger:Most definately, yes
William:Come back with me to Cambridge tomorrow I think I have a hunch about who this "Helena" is and if you can, come back with me to Boston
Roger:I don't know if I can
William:Your the only hope for me, and my sister, and for anyone else whose been wronged by Quince
Roger:I'll do it
William:Fantastic, when do we leave?
Roger:Tomorrow, hit the bed now, up at 8, get some breakfast and hit the 9:15 to Cambridge to take down Donald Quince
William:Lets do it
(They shake hands)
End Scene 3B
Scene 4A
(The next day we arrive at Edward's Mansion where we find Edward and Governor Quince having breakfast with Hines standing by)
Governor Quince:I say Edward, I should appoint you Chief of Dining at the next Congressional Party
Edward:I take full credit, Governor
(Hines walks away angered)
Governor Quince:I notice Young William isn't here, where has he gone too?
Edward:Harvard, he says he's interested in applying after talking with Donald. He says him and Donald have been getting along quite fairly lately in fact he says he's staying with a friend of Donalds
Governor Quince:Is he now?
Edward:Yes, I must say the boy seems to look up to Donald maybe one day these two will rule as President and Vice President of this country
Governor Quince:Would you excuse me for a moment I forgot to cancel my golf match-up with my brother this afternoon and I need to phone him. Would you mind telling me where the phone is?
Edward:In the living room
Governor Quince:Thank you
(He walks over to the other room and dials a number. Meanwhile in
Member of the Board:Hello?
Governor Quince:Yes, Christopher this is Bill
Member of the Board:Yes, Mr. Quince, what is it?
Governor Quince:Have you seen a young man with brownish blonde hair and a baseball cap is a little on the tall side head over to the school in the past 48 hours?
Member of the Board(looking through a list of names):Would you happen to have a name?
Governor Quince:William Banks
Member of the Board:Ah yes, he dropped by here yesterday and really upset a few members of the board with his comments
Governor Quince:Ah, what did he say?
Member of the Board:He said Yale was superior
Governor Quince:Its true
Member of the Board:Well good day, Governor
Governor Quince:Who pays to keep you lousy bums aboard
Member of the Board:You make a very good point
Governor Quince:Now what has he been doing?
Member of the Board:So far he's talked to the Head Coach of the Football team
Governor Quince:About?
Member of the Board:He said the offense
Governor Quince:Well if you see him on campus or anywhere nearby give me a notice
Member of the Board:Alright, have a wonderful day Governor
Governor Quince:You too
(They hang up, meanwhile we find that Roger and William have gotten off the train, Roger is in disguise wearing a trench coat, and hat along with sunglasses)
William:Do you know where the journal is?
Roger:I recommend checking the Headmaster's office, if not there then you can always try to get to Donald's home. Other than that it's either destroyed or lost
William:How do you suggest I get in there?
Roger:Well you're going to have to find a way to get to his office
William:I got it, do you still have all the numbers for everything here?
Roger:Yes, in my number book
William:Call his office and find a way to get him distracted long enough
Roger:I can try. I believe theres a payphone somewhere on campus when should I call?
William:15 minutes, that's all the time I need
Roger:Alright, I'm going to need some change though
William:Heres a quarter jeez you're the adult wheres your money?
Roger:Better the millionaire than the poor professor
William:I'm barely a 10-aire my dad's a cheap jerk
Roger:Well lets get to business, remember you need time to start some kind of conversation
William:Alright, catch you back soon
(William walks inside the
Desk Clerk:What can I do for you?
William:Ah, yes, um I have a meeting with the Headmaster
Desk Clerk:Ah, do you have an appointment?
William:I don't need one
Desk Clerk(annoyed):And why is that?
William:I am his son
Desk Clerk:Is that so?
William:Yes
Desk Clerk:Well then take the stairs and the first office in the middle is your father's office
William:Thank you
(He walks up the steps and knocks on the Headmaster's door)
Headmaster:Come in
(William enters)
Headmaster:What do you need young man?
William:Hi I'm here to talk about enrolling here at Harvard
Headmaster:Ah usually they send you to Christopher, one of the board members
William:Well they did but he recommended me to you
Headmaster:That's odd, what is his excuse?
William:He's at lunch?
Headmaster:Lunch? At
William:That's what he said
Headmaster:Well he is very lucky I'm not busy today, what would you like to discuss?
William:Well anything, really
Headmaster:Well how about I go over a few of the ground rules here at Harvard. Rule No.1, all students have a curfew, be up at
William:Um, sorry to interrupt but is that YOUR Army uniform?
Headmaster:Ah yes it is, it was back in the First World War, I served as a Lieutenant. They were fun times I say, but I always believed that we didn't destroy the Germans enough and one day they would be back. In 1941, I was proved correct and I was sent back out, in 4 years we thought that we crushed Adolf and the Nazis but they will return trust me they will
William:Um ok…any other rules?
Headmaster:Well theres…
(Phone rings)
Headmaster:Hello?
Roger(on the other line):Hein zo natika
Headmaster:AH! I knew it, you're going down Adolf!
(He puts on his uniform and puts on a helmet)
Headmaster:I must warn the others!
(He runs out)
Headmaster(running out):NAZI ALERT NAZI ALERT, HITLER IS ALIVE, WARN IKE!
Desk Clerk:Not again!
(He chases after him)
William:Now's my chance
(He looks through the desk and finds nothing)
William:Its gotta be in here
(He continues looking through every area of the room but finds nothing)
William:Its hopeless, the Journal was probably destroyed knowing my luck
(He knocks over a picture hanging from the wall by accident and behind he finds a safe that is key locked. He gets on a walky talky and calls for Roger)
William:Professor!
Roger:Yes, William?
William:You know anything that can crack a safe?
Roger:I have a wire from my number book from the bounding could that do?
William:Anything, just get to his window and hurry!
(William opens the window, out of the corner Roger appears)
William:Throw it up!
(Roger throws up the book, hastily William unbounds the wiring out of the book, he hears a door open downstairs. He takes out the wiring and puts the book in his pocket. As he hears footsteps, he sticks the wiring in the lock and opens it and grabs a book out of it and throws it down to Roger who catches it. As he shuts the door and hangs the picture back up the door opens and the desk clerk enters)
Desk Clerk:What are you doing here? You should be out minding your father?
William:I know but I didn't know what was happening
Desk Clerk:Well you better leave we had to calm him down and put him in another area. He's in the basketball court you'll find him there and you should know what was happening he nearly has a panic attack every week
William:Well this one took me by surprise
Desk Clerk:Trust me theres never a surprise when it comes to your father
(William exits the room and the building and meets Roger around front)
Roger:You're lucky to make it out
William:How did you know he'd freak out?
Roger:The guys paranoid about
William:Lets get to a café or something and read this book
Roger:Good call
(They walk off of campus)
Scene 5A
(We see Roger King aka Professor Daugherty sitting at the police station being questioned)
Officer 1:Now, Mr. Daugherthy, tell us now. If you tell us who that kid is, we will let you got off free but you must not return to Cambridge.
King:I'd rather rot in a jail cell then let justice be unserved
Officer 2:Look the University isn't going to press charges if anything they're willing to pay you
King:I'd rather lose all the money I have than win all the money in the world
Officer 1:Whatever you say, Professor, take him away
(Officer 2 takes the Professor out of the room in hand cuffs)
The Headmaster:Whats he telling you?
Officer 1:Nothing he's not even compromising
The Headmaster:This isn''t good, him and that boy have stolen from the University
Officer 1:You said you met with the boy, did he give you a name?
The Headmaster:Nope, well whatever it is we should find him
Officer 1:We'll check with other police stations to see if they may have spotted him
The Headmaster:Could you put out a notice or something?
Officer 1:For a stolen book? Theres not enough criminal charges to call for one. It can't be that important can it?
The Headmaster:The contents of the book contains very private information on Harvard students and faculty
Officer 1:It sounds more like a school issue to me, send out your own wanted ads, theres worse crimes floating around in this area than just the theft of a private book.
(The Headmaster leaves through the door and the Desk Clerk is there waiting for him)
The Headmaster:We're going to be in hot water over this
Desk Clerk:I feel we should question some of the staff preferably Chris
The Headmaster:Yes, how did he know Christopher?
Desk Clerk:We'll have to check and see
(They exit the police station. Meanwhile we find William limping into his house where he sees Donald, Hannah, Edward, and Bill)
Edward:Ah my boy welcome back from Cambridge
William(hiding book behind his back):Glad to see you too, dad
Donald:Ah, so you visited Cambridge, how was it?
William:It was alright
Edward:Whats that thing behind your back?
William:Oh its, um, uh book I got from the school. A detailed story of the school and its finding. I've gotten around to reading a few pages. Its very good so far
Edward:Ah, may I see it?
William:Not at the moment, I'd like to finish reading it first and then you can read it
Donald:Funny, I don't recall them ever offering me a book when I was there
William:Well, um. they just made it recently
Donald:Oh so they have?
William:Yes, as a matter of fact I was one of the first people to get copys of the book
Donald:They usually notify me on anything related, how come I'm not aware of this?
William:Maybe your notice got lost in the mail or something?
Donald:I guess we'll have to make a phone call to the post office, eh, father?
Bill:Oh we can make another million out of them...oh wait we already do
(They both laugh)
William:Yeah, whatever
Hannah:Are you still going golfing with Donald tomorrow?
William:Yeah
Donald(putting his arm around Hannah):Fantastic we tee off at 9am, I'll come by in the limo and we'll ride over.(looking over at Hannah)Would you like to come my dear?
Hannah:Oh no, I'm not so much for golf. I love tennis a bit more?
Donald:Well your lucky...later on at least because they're building the tennis courts as I speak. I'll see if they can allow you to join and play and maybe we can enter a doubles tournament together
Hannah(excited):Oh!
(They kiss)
William:Woah, you two go get a room and use it for makeout time
Hannah(giggling):You silly
William:Actually I was talking to dad and the Governor
Bill:I beg your pardon?
William:Catch you cool cats later
(He runs out the door)
Bill:I'll say your son is quite rude
Edward:Gets it from his mother
Hannah:Hey!
Edward:Oh Hannah you know its true
Hannah:He's smart, did he get that from mom too?
Edward:Oh please, your mother couldn't even pass at High School. Clearly its from me
Hannah:Ugh...well I'm going to head upstairs and take a shower
(She kisses Donald on the cheek)
Hannah:I'll see you in about a half hour or so. I love you
Donald:I love you too, Hannah.
(She goes upstairs when the door shuts, Donald sits down)
Donald:You know it is quite rude what your son has been saying
Edward:Comes from his upbringing, he spent too many years with his mother. Not enough discipline with her. He shouldn't be too much of a concern after tomorrow though
Donald:Guarenteed not if my wit doesn't convey him then the entertainment at the party should
Edward:For his sakes
Bill:Hows the private school going?
Edward:Father McKenzie has already said it should be easy to ship him to France. However, I feel that doesn't have to be an option if he decides to agree to the deal. Now let me ask you when am I going to see the contract?
Bill:As soon as I finish writing it up. Have some patience Edward
Edward:I have plenty but I'd rather get this out of the way so I can deal with the others issues such as telling my employees what their future is and dealing with the "William" situation
Bill:I assure you, Edward that it'll be done soon. After all it took Rockefeller a long time before he reached success
Edward:Well I'm just very anxious, the next few months are crucial to all of us
End Scene 5A
Scene 5B
(We find William knocking on a door and Mary answers)
Mary:Oh William, what is it you need?
William:I want to speak to Robert
Mary:Oh, he's around back
(He walks around back towards the gate opens it and finds Robert throwing a baseball through a tire and off a backstop)
William:Hey buddy, how you been?
Robert:Oh, William, uh its been a while
Willam(down tone):Yeah
Robert:So what do you want?
William:I want to talk to you, I haven't in a while
Robert:What would you want with a loser like me
William:I want you to come with me tomorrow
Robert:To where?
William:A Country Club?
Robert:To do what?
William:A game of golf
Robert:I don't know man, I ain't really much for Golf
William:I can make it worth your wild
Robert:Explain
William:I can get you season tickets to the Red Sox
Robert:It won't matter, I'm leaving anyways
William:Why?
Robert:Theres nothing left here for me
William:What are you talking about
Robert:I'm leaving, Will, I've lived here for so long and its bought me nothin. I'm going on the road and I'm going to make something of my life
William:Can you do this one favor for me
Robert:What have you done for me?
William:I was the one of three people to stand by you when you broke your arm
(Robert swallows his pride realizing that his cause is defeated)
Robert:Fine I'll go
William:Good make sure you wear some good clothes the guy we're golfing with is very fancy type
Robert:Who is he?
William:You'll find out
(He winks)
William:See you tomorrow around 9am sharp
Robert:Alright, bye Will
(William leaves meanwhile we find that the Headmaster and the Desk Clerk has returned to the campus where they find Christopher waiting in the office)
The Headmaster:Christopher, conveniant that you're here
Christopher:Yes it is, I understand that the book has been stolen
The Headmaster:Yes indeed
Christopher:Can you describe the culprit
The Headmaster:He seemed to be at least under 6 feet, brown hair, and a Red Sox cap
Christopher:Thats the boy, Governor Quince warned me about him
The Headmaster:How come we were not informed?
Christopher:I never saw it neccessary for I assumed the boy didn't pose much of a threat
The Headmaster:Interesting...your fired
Christopher:What do you mean?
The Headmaster:Your lucky we don't call for your arrest. Thanks to your ignorance the biggest secret in Cambridge will be unleashed upon the world soon and we'll all be in trouble so if we're going down so are you
Christopher:Now gentlemen please, lets compromise
Desk Clerk:There is no compromising, Chris, you have made a major mistake
The Headmaster:That alone accounts for dismissal
Christopher:This is an outrage, I have been on this board for years, it was people like me who has kept the academic standards high at Harvard, I deserve a 2nd chance
The Headmaster:Life doesn't give second chances you screw up this badly theres no going back. You have til the end of the night to leave the campus
(Christopher walks out angrily and cursing)
Desk Clerk:Now what do we do?
The Headmaster:We have to contact Governor Quince one way or another
Desk Clerk:I believe his office number is somewhere around here
The Headmaster:Good, we're going to have to get in contact with him. Otherwise we could face major trouble
Desk Clerk:What about Chris? Surely he may go against us and Quince?
The Headmaster:Christopher is soft, if he has a brain left in him, he goes straight to home, regroups, and applies at another school for a Administration job. Either way things will be interesting very soon if we don't act now
End Scene 5B
Scene 6A
(We find William walking down the stairs in a red sweater vest and dark pants)
Edward:Looking quite genuinely Will
William:Quite, I'd say
Edward:Are you going to the party tonight?
William:Yes, it should be loads of fun
Edward:Well see you if you get back in time
(He heads outside there where Donald's limo is waiting)
Donald:Ah William, young lad, get in we got breakfast at the club in about 20 minutes
William(walking towards the limo):Is it possible if we can make a stop?
Donald:Where to?
William:A friends house, he wants to tag along
Donald:I guess thats no problem
(They get in the car)
Donald:So who is he?
William:Just a good friend of mine
(They drive a little further and arrive at Robert's house)
William(from inside):Rob, get in
(Robert gets in the limo sitting on the far right end)
Donald:Oh you're the boy he's talking about, whats your name?
Robert:Rob, Rob Thompson
Donald:A-ha, you still in grade school?
Robert:No I graduated last month
Donald:Ah, thats well looking at any colleges?
Robert:No, I'm really thinking about leaving town
Donald:A-ha, I see. I'm Donald Quince, Harvard alumnist, football letterman, I was in Parade Magazines Top 5 baseball prospects but declined to get into politics
Robert:Oh, are you related to the Governor Quince?
Donald:Ah, yes indeed, who do you plan to vote for in November?
Robert:I'm a bit of a Democrat myself, so I'd like to see who my party is nominating
Donald(a bit of a frown):To each his own I suppose
(We cut to Mary and Hannah at Mary's house playing bridge)
Mary:I hope we can find a new place for tennis soon
Hannah:Oh I already found one?
Mary:Where?
Hannah:The Country Club
Mary:Doesn't that cost a lot?
Hannah:Not really, Donald is paying for the membership
Mary:What about me?
Hannah:I can get him to buy you one
Mary:You sure he'd do it?
Hannah:Sure, he loves me too much
Mary:Will we get any competition?
Hannah:Sure, Donald says theres plenty there
Mary:Thats good, its been a while since we last played
Hannah:Say, would you like to go to a party tonight?
Mary:Sure, where is it?
Hannah:Plymouth Island
Mary:Whose hosting it?
Hannah:Donald is
Mary:Oh
Hannah:I figure you can come along and we can find a good man for you
Mary(giggling):What times it start?
Hannah:Around 6
Mary:I guess I'll have to get ready now then
Hannah:Probably, I'll pick you up whenever you're ready
Mary:Alright
(We go to the Country Club where Donald, Robert, and William are golfing)
Donald:Alright boys, I got a little lead on you guys, Roberts about 1 down and William, you're a little bit more down, um somewhere around 15(chuckling)
William(chuckling):Don't worry Donald, I always come back and win
Donald:Ha, not this time Will
William:You'll see
Donald:Alright 18th hole, I'm up
(Donald tees off and hits it straight into a sand)
Donald:Ah darn, guess I'll just have to wing it
(William hits it and it gets lost in the trees)
Donald:So much for the comeback
(Robert goes up and hits in directly...a hole in one)
Donald:Son of a gun, that was an amazing shot
(Donald goes to the sand pit, tries to hit it but the sand blows back in his face)
William:Well Donald, I guess your the one down
(Later we see the three walking back to the Country Club lodge)
William:Hey I'll be right back, I got to use the restroom
Donald:Hurry, I got to get the party ready
William:Just a quick one
(He walks off)
Donald:Robert, my boy, that was a great game you played out there
Robert:Thanks
Donald:How did you learn to read the ball and hit it?
Robert:I got the read thing from baseball, hitting and aiming is like pitching. You got to know the strength of the hitter and where to throw. Sort of the same thing, but it helps with reading
Donald:A pitcher you are?
Robert:Yes
Donald:How good were you?
Robert:Really good til I injured my arm in a car accident and had to sit out the season. What did you play?
Donald:Left Field I had a helluva arm, no one could strike me out
Robert:I bet I could've
Donald:Ha, please, no one could ever do it
Robert:Never underestimate a man's arm, Donald
Donald:You have any girls?
Robert:Use to, but we broke up over differences with personal deals
Donald:You should see my girl
Robert:Oh who is she?
Donald:William's sister, Hannah
Robert(devastated look):Oh, thats c-cool
Donald:Yeah, if all goes to plans we merry by the fall
Robert(sadden):Oh
(William comes back)
William:Lets get this show on the road
Donald:Ha, I agree
(They arrive back at Robert's house)
William:I'll walk from here, Donald
Donald:Alright see you at the party
William:See you there
(He drives off)
(Robert walks towards his house)
William:Hey buddy, why the hurry?
Robert:Nothin, just leave me be
William:What are you frustrated or something
(Robert shoves him)
Robert:Frustrated isn't the god damn word for it, this is garbage
William:Why what happened?
Robert:You screw me, everybody screws me and no one does a thing about it
William:Just tell me
Robert:You know why you brought me
William:Why?
Robert:To rub it in, its not like I feel like a loser already and I got you making life miserable for me
William:Rub what?
Robert:That I lost Hannah, I know I lost her but for you to rub it in like that is pathetic. Some friend you are
(He walks in towards the house)
William:Rob, wait!
Robert:There is no waiting, I'm done with you and this so-called joke
William:I need your help
(He turns around)
Robert:Why should I help you?
William:Because you can benefit too?
Robert:What can I benefit helping you?
William:It can give you something you need
Robert:And whats that?
William:Hannah
(Robert pauses)
Robert:I'm listening
William:Donald isn't who he makes himself to be
Robert:What do you mean?
William:If we don't act fast, her life could be in danger
Robert:What are you talking about?
William:Come to my house
(We cut to the Headmaster and Desk Clerk. The Desk Clerk has hung up the phone)
Headmaster:What did his secretary say?
Desk Clerk:She can't find him, he didn't show up to the office today
Headmaster:This cannot be good, we got to get to his office on Monday
Desk Clerk:But thats when my trip to Miami is
Headmaster:Would you rather have 7 days in the sun or the rest of your life in prison? Because if we don't you'll get jail and so will I and I sure as hell isn't going to be locked up with you
Desk Clerk:We both agreed to this and we both need to find a way out of this
Headmaster:The only way out of jail is to find that boy. Do you even know how he got here
Desk Clerk:That'd be easier had you not fired Christopher
Headmaster:Bah he couldn't help us then, he can't help us now, besides hes probably already making his way to another school
Desk Clerk:I guess my only solution is that we get to his office in Boston on Monday. Otherwise we're finished
Headmaster:This can't end well for any of us
(We go to William's house where we find them looking at the book)
Robert:You weren't kidding, this guy clearly has problems
William:I know thats why we need to act fast or else Hannah's going to meet the same fate Helena met
Robert:Are you sure he killed her?
William:Theres no other solution
Robert:What can we do?
End Scene 6A
Scene 6B
Edward:So it goes down tonight?
Bill:Yes
Edward:Are you sure that she's going to agree initially?
Donald:I couldn't see why not, you said it yourself shes on the rebound from a bad relationship and this past week shows to me, at least, shes way into me
Edward:Well this better work
Donald:If she declines initially, I will convince her before the night is over
Edward:How did you manage to handle William?
Donald:Easily, he seemed to have no problem with me and we got a long fine
Edward:That's good should I call off the boarding school suggestion?
Governor Quince:I wouldn't quite do it yet, lets see how the boy reacts to the proposal first
Donald:No need to worry about a thing, father I'll have him taken care off and convince him on buying into it
Edward:Speaking of a business-eque move...
Governor Quince:You have nothing to worry about Edward, my secretary is writing the contract up and she will send it to you when she finishes
Edward:Alright, I am just saying, I'd rather get these two affairs done quickly. Who do you have on the guest list tonight?
Governor Quince:Just a few members of my family, along with Senator Kennedy and Ted Williams
Edward:That democrat?
Governor Quince:Yes, his father and I were good friends at Harvard and I'm interested to see what ideas Young Kennedy has
Edward:Think you can get him on our side?
Governor Quince:Not likely, Joe was a big democrat and his boys are very loyal to his wishes from what I hear
Edward:Well I guess it'll be interesting to see the other half of this state. Donald…did William mention anything about going to the party?]
Donald:No
Edward:Good, I'd rather have him find out later than cause a commotion during the party if he attacks the marriage proposal.
Donald:Again, Edward, you have nothing to worry about
(Cut to a road where we find Robert and William in a car heading to the mansion)
Robert(hair slicked back, in a white tux):Alright, do I look good?
William:That's the sharpest you ever looked
Robert:Do I have to wear this outfit?
William:Yes, it's a formal occasion, we look sharp, we execute sharply
Robert:Then why are you not in a suit?
William:Because my dad would get suspicious, by being me, he just turns a blind eye…like always.
(The car pulls into the front of the house where they exit)
Hines:When should I return
(William hands him a bunch of money)
William:Why don't you go out, call up Ms.Tombs and get a dinner and a movie and meet us back when your done
Hines:Will do sir
(He takes the money and drive off)
William:Alright lets do this
(They walk in)
William:Alright, before we make our splash lets get some drinks
Robert:I'll join you in a few minutes, I'm going to use the bathroom
(They separate, Robert walks toward the east and William to a bar stand)
Bartender:What would you take for a drink sir?
William:Martini, please
(The Bartender makes the drink and hands it over, from behind a hand grabs it from William, its Edward)
Edward:Not so fast, my boy
William:Oh, uh hey dad
Edward:What are you doing here?
William:I told you, I've seen a new light and I'm here at Donald's request
Edward:Oh that's good then
(We cut to Robert whose roaming the hallways he sees a women across the hall)
Robert:Excuse me, Miss?
(She turns around, its Hannah)
Robert:Oh, um oh my
Robert(turning red):Y-y-yes…
Hannah(surprised):How did you get here?
Robert:I got a ride
(Mary appears out of a corner)
Mary:Hannah Banks are you…
(She stops when she sees Robert)
Mary:What are you doing here?
Robert:Well uh, I saw that there was a party tonight and I'd figure why not just come along and enjoy myself.
Mary:I guess that makes sense
Hannah(nervous):So uh what was it that you were asking about?
Robert:Uh, oh yeah would you happen to know where the restrooms are?
Hannah:Oh, yes uh they're just around the corner 2nd door to your left
Robert:Oh, um thank you
(He quickly walks away)
Hannah:Did you invite him?
Mary:No, I haven't seen him all day, I have no idea how he got here
Hannah:I just hope he doesn't bother me and Donald, does he know we're dating?
Mary:Not that I know
Hannah:Maybe he won't bother us
(We cut back to Edward and William talking)
Edward:So how was the game of golf today?
William:It was good
Edward:Did you win?
William:No I got absolutely hammered by him
Edward:Well son its your first time, maybe you can bounce back and one day beat ole Donald
William(putting arm around Edward):I think the day I beat Donald will be sooner than you think
(Suddenly Donald walks up to them)
Donald:Is that so, young William?
William:Yes indeed
Donald:Ha, your golf skills are inferior to mine. I think you should stick to a sport, I'm not good at like um, hunting
William:That's ironic, Don, I always saw you as being crafty in the arts of shooting and hunting
Donald:Well, I did try rifling in college, but never saw myself as a good shooter
William:I think you'd be really good with gun, Don
Donald:Challenging me to a duel?
William:Maybe
Donald:I'd do that but I'm no Aaron Burr, and your certainly no Alexander Hamilton.
My dad would hate a political scandal
William:Sounds like hes big into cover-ups
Donald:Ha! My dad has nothing to hide and neither does me. Except for my embarrassing loss in Golf
Edward:Oh there was a third person?
Donald:Yes it was that young lad…
(Before Donald can finish, William spills the martini on him)
William:Oh my, I am…very sorry
Donald:Ah, its alright must've been bad flashbacks from your loss
William:Heh, yeah I guess
Donald:Oh well I'll just go change and I'll be back whenever
(He walks away)
Edward:Well son enjoy the party, I am going to go meet the Senator Kennedy
(He turns around on the stool and is face-to-face with Hannah and Mary)
William(nervous):Oh uh hey sis and look who it is lovely lovely Mary
(He kisses her hand)
Mary(turning red):Glad to see you too, William…but in all seriousness…
Hannah:Why is HE here?
William:Who?
Hannah:Robert, did you bring him?
William:Hold that thought
(He runs away)
Hannah:I knew it, he hasn't changed, he still doesn't like Donald
Mary:Maybe they're just here as friends
Hannah:Maybe, but I'd rather he'd keep Robert away from Donald and I
(William looks around while walking and bumps into Robert))
Robert:Ah, hey I think that Hannah knows I'm here
William:Really?
Robert:Yeah
William:You don't say
Robert:I guess she told you
William:I guess your right
Robert:Great, I got to get out of here I look too suspicious
William:Don't worry, just as long as my father doesn't spot you, you're alright look theres other things to do here so lets just look for some
Robert:Yes
(They walk and from behind a voice shouts, its Donald)
Donald:Oh Robert, nice to see you here
(He offers a handshake)
Robert(nervous):Glad to see you too, Donald
Donald:Rob, you look nervous
Robert:Its social occasions, I-I'm not quite used to them
Donald:Ah its alright, if you hang around with me more you will get used to them and much much more
(Out of a room, Governor Quince appears)
Governor Quince:Ah, boys, I hope you can make it out to the Front Room and listen to our big announcements
William:Will do so, Bill, I mean Governor Quince
Governor Quince:You really are a smart-aleck
(They exit)
Robert:We got to leave
William:Not now, we got to finish this
Robert:This is getting too risky
William:Seriously, not even I am scared of my father
Robert:He was in the army
William:That means nothing lets just go
(He drags him out to the Front Room where we see a band playing, they finish and Governor Quince comes to the mic)
Governor Quince:I'd like to thank you all for coming especially you, Senator Kennedy, maybe one day you'll see the light and become a Republican(Kennedy laughs). As you all may know Quince Corp has been in business for close to 60 years. In that past 60 years, we've faced stiff competition from Banks Enterprise. Well after a long years of fighting and war, we've come to a peace settlement. The result is a merger(gasping in the crowd)now I know that many of you aren't too "keen" on this merger, but I assure you the stockholders and the employees will all be safe. We will have some cuts but rest assure that at the moment your jobs are safe. Now to the man behind Banks Enterprise, Edward Banks.
(Applause)
Edward:I am glad to say that this merger is what is best for the both of us and that all parties will benefit from it. We haven't came to a full agreement but things should be in order by at least Wednesday with an official announcement at the end of the week. In the week after the decision, we will decide whether or not certain people will stay or certain people will go. As for the location of the building, we will be moving out of both the old
(Edward leaves the stage and Donald gets on)
Donald:Thank you, everyone first I'd like to make notice to two young men in the crowd, Robert, William may you please step up?
(They shake their heads no)
Donald:Ah don't be shy, you two, just come on up here
(They back away)
Donald:Playing tough huh(smile) Arnold, Johnny, take them up here
(Two of Donald's security guards grab Robert and William and take them to the stage)
Donald:I'd like to give credit to these two young men, William Banks and Robert…what is your name?
Robert:L-lysander, Robert Lysander
Donald:Mr.Lysander, everyone
(Audience applauds except Edward who frowns)
Donald:Today marked a sad and rare moment, I lost to this man in golf, it was close but at the end he beat me. Besides being a good golfer, I spoke to him and he seems to have a very good point of view on this world and on top of it, a great baseball pitcher. I must say, you mightily impressed me, Robert
Robert:Thanks, um
Donald:No need to, you deserve the credit, maybe one day when I'm running for President, I could give you a top job, Mr.Lysander. Maybe even Quince/Lysander for a Presidential ticket, just as long as you pick the good political party
Robert(laughing):It'll be hard to change but I guess I can do that for you, Donald
Donald:Please call me Don
Robert:Okay, Don
Donald:In private only, please, I'd rather not start a trend
Robert:I understand
Donald:On top of this praising of Mr.Lysander, I must make a very important and crucial announcement regarding the future
(Before he can say anymore, William interrupts)
William:Hold that thought, Donald, I'd like to speak on a more important issue
Donald:Well, I'd hate to be overshadowed, but I believe in freedom of speech, so carry on, Mr.Banks
William:Okay, thank you Donald. As you all know theres been something that's bothered me, lately. I read it in the papers all the time and that is the gross abuse of many humans. The event that makes me put light on this is the death of Helena Grimes. Helena Grimes was a student of Radcliffe, which is right next to Harvard, so for many many(looking at Donald) Harvard students it hit real close to home. Helena Grimes was a bright young girl who grew up in this area and dreamed of helping the world and curing it of its problems. But some problems she couldn't fix(looking at Donald, again, Donald starts to sweat). One night, she drove off unexplainedly and never return. A few days ago her body washed up on a beach, some say it was suicide as the car was never found, others say the girl was killed. I'm no expert on homicide or suicide but I can tell which is which when I see it. I saw the pictures of her body in the paper and no human being is ever abused as bad as she was when committing the act of suicide. If anything, my personal belief is that Helena Grimes of Radcliffe was murdered by a psychotic maniac. A personal tip to women is to keep an eye on guys like this, (looking to Hannah) they're always the one you least suspect. I hope that someone brings this maniac to justice before other women meet this fate.
(The audience looks upon silently. Donald walks back up to the mic)
Donald(nervous):Well, um thank you William. I speak for everyone when I say that people like this are sick and do very much so indeed need help. Is anyone else wanting to interrupt or can I finally make my announcement?(silence) No then? Good…anyhow, I've been in love a many of times, I've been wrong, but this time I feel I am right and I know it hasn't been long enough in the eyes of many, but to me, its now or never. So please, may I call you, Hannah Banks to the stage.
(Hannah, confused walks onto the stage)
Donald:Hannah, I have known you only but a week, but it feels like a thousand weeks since the beautiful afternoon we met. I feel since my father and yours are making a commitment to a merger, I feel I should make a commitment to you. So please, Hannah Banks(getting on one night and pulling out a box with a ring inside), will you merry me, Donald Quince?
(Hannah looks on surprised she looks around at William and Robert to Edward and the Governor to Mary and then to Donald)
Hannah(whispering):No, I-I can't
(Donald suddenly goes from happy to sad to angry in one motion)
Donald(whispering):Why not?
Hannah(low voice):I-I just feel its not the right time and I don't feel the way you feel on terms of how it is at the momen
Donald:What?!!?!
Hannah:I just don't think we're on the area where I feel that you are truly the one
Donald(furious):What do you mean!
(He shoves her to the ground as William and Robert look on stunned. Realizing what he's done, Donald's face turns red and he runs off the stage. Mary helps Hannah off the stage and she walks off with her crying. Governor Quince gets on the stage)
Governor Quince:There is nothing wrong folks, just go home right now, its not a good time. But I assure you things are going to be ok
(People begin to clear out)
Governor Quince:Johnny, you and whatever-his-name-is just clear them out
Johnny:Will do sir(voice fading off)Okay nothing to see just go home
(Governor Quince and Edward go off to the direction where Donald went)
William(whispering):Quick to the window in the room behind us, we can catch what they're saying
Robert:What about Hannah?
William:You might be one of the last people she wants to see after what happened now and with you two
(They walk into the room behind them where they listen through the open window where Governor Quince, Donald, and Edward are talking)
Donald:I cannot believe it, I cannot flippin believe it
Governor Quince:Look, just relax
Donald:How can she say no to me? Honest how can she?
Governor Quince:Look just hold on
(Edward appears)
Edward:That is no excuse what you did
Donald:What I did? She's the one that messed it up she should've said yes
Edward:Donald, by shoving my daughter to the ground, all you do is ruin everything
Donald:I'm sorry, but you're the one who wants me to wed her in September
Edward:It can work still
Governor Quince:Gentlemen, please, this can still work. You just need to apologize Donald and make it sound sincere.
Donald:I guess you're right
Governor Quince:We'll work on something tonight, just apologize to her and thanks will be ok
(Inside)
William:Quick, go and lock them out
(Robert runs back into the Front room and locks all the doors. William walks out of the room)
Robert:Now what?
William:Hines should be back by now, we can send them home
(They run over to the Quince's living room, where we find Hannah and Mary sitting on the couch with Hannah crying on Mary's shoulder)
William:Hey Mary, hey sis
Hannah:Just go away
William:Look we're sorry about what Donald did
Mary:They're just trying to help
Hannah:I can understand that its just Donald in the time I've known him hasn't seemed to show that side of him, you know? He wants me to merry him but its like you said, Will, should I have to take this abuse?
William:Look I think its best for you two to go home
Hannah:But what about Dad?
William:He has a car, Hines will take you home, he's around front right now with the car
Hannah:That's good, I'll see you when I get home
(Hannah and Mary head towards the door)
Robert:Hannah, um wait
(Hannah turns around)
Hannah:What is it?
Robert:Come here
(She walks over to him he opens his arms and they embrace, she puts her head on his shoulder)
Robert:Look at me, I am very sorry for what happened tonight, I know I shouldn't be in this position to say this considering what happened with us, but I hope that Donald will come around and treat you better. If he does not, however, I hope that the next guy, whoever he may be, treats you a whole lot better. You deserve something better than what you already have.
Hannah:Thank you Robert, I appreciate that
(Hannah walks towards the door)
Robert:Hannah…
Hannah:Yes?
Robert:I love you
(She runs over and kisses him)
Hannah(unsure):I love you too…
(She walks away and they leave)
William:How come you always got to kiss my sister, why can't I kiss YOUR sister
Robert:Kid, you'll learn when you get older about charm and building a relationship
(Edward, Governor Quince, and Donald appear from the hallway)
Donald:Where is Hannah?
William:She just left
Donald:What do you mean she just left?
William:She went home
Donald:Didn't you try to stop her?
William:Didn't think we had too
Edward:How is she getting home?
William:The same way I got here…Hines
Donald:Well aren't you all just geniouses, some friends you are
William:My apoligees but its like I said, I can't stand a guy who hits a girl
Donald:I'm not in the mood, I am going to bed
(He walks away)
William:Goodnight Donald
Donald:Whatever…
Edward:What you did was wrong and we're going to talk about it on the way home, and Robert, if I ever see you around my daughter I will break you in HALF
Robert:You worry too much, sir
William:Better watch yourself, Robbie(winks)
End Scene 6BScene 7A
(It is the next day we find William, Edward, and Hannah in the church)
Father McKenzie:Today we have a very special guest here in the house...Governor Bill Quince
(William gets frown profusely)
Governor Quince:Hello citizens of Massachusetts I have came here to this house of God to talk about forgiveness. Over the years as a politician and a businessman I have made a lot of enemies. But recently I have begun forgiving these enemies of mine and one is Edward Banks. Edward and I have been, for years, competitors in business. He has tried to ruin me and I have tried to ruin him. Recently, however, we have grown to become good friends and this week both our companies will merge. I figure if I can forgive him then we can forgive the ones that have wronged us. Allow me to bring out my son Donald Quince.
(William gets the "sinking" look)
Donald:Some say that anger is the work of the Devil, himself. I am one to agree about this. Last night I got angry at my significant other and shoved her. I know you're here, Hannah, and I want to say that I am very very sorry. I did not mean to do what I did. I did not mean to yell. So if you can find it in your heart, would you please forgive me?
(Hannah gets up, walks over to the front of the room and embraces Donald)
Hannah(whispering to him):I forgive you
(Everybody claps with the exception of William. We fade into William sitting in Robert's room)
Robert:Are you serious?
William:Yes, he actually did it
Robert:Damn, this guy isn't going to fold easily
William:Neither is she, she's out of her head
Robert:I'm starting to think this is my fault
William:What are you basing this off of?
Robert:I should've never broke down
William:*sigh* Rob, you can't blame yourself for this
Robert:I have to fix it, Will, if I never had freaked out this would've never happened and Hannah and I would be together still
William:None of us could've saw this coming. I just wish we had another chance
Robert:I got it!
William:What?
Robert:Blackmail
William:What do you mean?
Robert:We tell him that we know about his secret life
William:Are you crazy? He'd find a way to take us out for sure
Robert:No, not us, an alter ego of sorts
William:What are you saying?
Robert:We call his house and tell him that we know everything about him and that if he doesn't leave Hannah we will destroy his life
William:Thats a good idea
Robert:I did finish in the Top 10 of my class...let me ask you something
William:What?
Robert:Do you think that Hannah still has feelings for me?
William:I can't really say, I was surprised she kissed ya
Robert:It surprised me too
William:Maybe once we get past this "Donald" thing she'll get back with you. Right now she's desperate thats why she accepted Donald so easily
(Robert's mother walks into the room)
Robert's Mother:William, your father called, he wants you to come home and have dinner
William:Alright, see ya later Rob
Robert:See ya
(William leaves the house)
(Meanwhile we head over to the Banks House where Emily McKenzie has arrived, she knocks on the door and Hannah answers)
Hannah:Oh Mrs.McKenzie, what brings you here?
Emily:You, Hannah
Hannah:Oh what about me?
Emily:The thing with Donald
Hannah:What about us?
Emily:Well the other day, Thomas told me that you two plan to get married
Hannah:Oh, yes he proposed to me last night but I declined though I'm considering it right now
Emily:Well as you know the book says the only pure marriage is real love. Are you really this much in love with Donald?
Hannah:Well, he's nice and sweet and well...I really don't know
Emily:Whats the conflict
Hannah:*sigh*Well you see I think you know this because I'm sure experienced this at one point at time...I'm having trouble getting over
Emily:Ah yes, I have had this problem before
Hannah:You see, I was with a boy for 2 or 3 years and we were so close, but we broke up because he broke down. He got hurt and seemingly lost all chance of his life long dream
Emily:Does he still love you?
Hannah:I'm not sure, we see each other last night for the first time in a while and he seems to still care about me which is surprising due to the circumstances of the break-up...I kissed him and it felt right, but after Donald apoligized to me, I just felt so...wrong. I really don't know what to do here.
Emily:I was in a simular situation with Thomas. You weren't born yet and your father hadn't quite made his first dollar. It was 1928 and I was had just broken up with Thomas. I met a boy who seemed to be right for me but deep down I couldn't forget Thomas. He just seemed to always be there and he seemed to love me more. At the end I left him and went back with Thomas and we got married. Overall, I got to say just follow your heart about this one. Think about whats best for you, your future, and for the boy, himself.
(Edward walks outside)
Edward:Hannah, dinner is ready...oh hello Mrs.McKenzie, would you like to come in for dinner?
Emily:Oh no Brother Banks, I'm expected back at home soon
Edward:Alright have a good day
Hannah:Thank you Mrs.McKenzie
Emily:Anytime Hannah
(She leaves they go inside)
Edward:What was that about?
Hannah:Oh nothing just girl talk
(We go to a street corner where William is sitting on a bench waiting for a bus, it arrives. He gets on it, pays a dollar and as he gets on he looks and sees Christopher, the Board Member from Harvard)
Christopher:You!
(He gets up out of his seat and William gets off the bus as Christopher chases after him. William runs down the streets as Christopher continues to pursue him. William runs into an allyway where Christopher continues the pursuit. William trips over a pothole in the ground hurting his knee. Christopher catches up and as William tries to get up and continue running but is grabbed by the collar of the shirt and is thrown down by Christopher)
Christopher:I got you now, you little scumbag
William(laughing nervously):Hey buddy, heh how are you?
Christopher:I lost my job because of YOU
William:Woah woah woah, what do you mean?
Christopher:You know that whole theft deal with the book. Well they fired me over it
William:Thats redicolous, you had nothing to do with it
Christopher:I know, try telling that to the Headmaster
William:I would but I'd face prison time for theft
Christopher:Hmph, your sense of humour is terrible
William:Maybe I can help you
Christopher:What could you possibly do?
William:Get your job back
Christopher:And how do you plan on doing that?
William:You help me take down Quince
Christopher:And how do you plan on doing that?
William:I have the book don't I?
Christopher:Yes you do
William:Well then its simple you help me blackmail Quince
Christopher:And what do I get out of this?
William:Well right now, I'm trying to get him away from my sister, by scaring him he might back down. But Donald is the selfish type so he'll probably won't. If we tell the media about this then you'll see heads roll. Donald will see prison time, the Governor will be impeached, the Headmaster and the Desk Clerk will face jail time and you'll get your job back for wrongful termination. Remember you had nothing to do with the robbery so therefore they should not have been able to fire you
Christopher:You have a point there. What will be my duty exactly
William:Well first, what exactly are they doing over at Cambridge?
Christopher:Well they tried to get ahold of the Governor to inform him the robbery
William:...Thats not good
Christopher:I know, they have your description and everything
William:Say they can't get a hold of him
Christopher:They'll come here to Boston and try to meet him in his office. Thats what they were considering at least
William:Well we're going to have to act fast then or else the whole plot is ruined. Any idea how we can stop them?
Christopher:Well, the Headmaster usually twice a summer has a meeting with the over Ivy League headmasters to discuss plans for all the schools. Theres no way to get out of the meeting and its usually held in New York City
William:Brilliant, we'll call him and tell him there is a meeting
Christopher:How do we tend to David though?
William:Who?
Christopher:The Desk Clerk guy
William:He shouldn't be too much of a problem. Either way I think I should make an appointment with the Governor tomorrow and if he comes near, you take care of him
Christopher:Alright, when do we start the phone calls?
William:Whenever I can find him I'll give you a call when I figure out where he is. Do you have his house number?
Christopher:Yes
William:Ok, where are you staying at?
Christopher:The Mariott at 7th street, dial 555-0921
William:Alright I'll call you there
Christopher:See ya
(They both depart)
End Scene 7A
Scene 7B
(Its the next day, we find Hannah and Mary sitting on the back deck at Hannah's house)
Mary:He really came to the church?
Hannah:Yes it was really sweet
Mary:He seems desperate to me
Hannah:Its not desperation its love. I think he really loves me
Mary:Did you reconsider the marriage proposal?
Hannah:Not quite, I talked to Mrs. McKenzie the other day and after that, I'm really not sure if we should marry
Mary:Why?
Hannah:Well...don't say this to anyone else but...I'm still in love with Robert
Mary(a bit happy):You are?
Hannah:Yes
Mary:How did you come to this?
Hannah:The other night...after I kissed him
Mary:You kissed him?
Hannah:Yeah, right after you walked out the door
Mary:Oh wow
Hannah:Yeah, I know. It felt so wrong, yet so right.
Mary:Did you tell Donald?
Hannah:Of course not, if I did he'd be devestated and besides they seem to be getting along
Mary:Hows that working?
Hannah:No idea, William brought him to the golf course and they became good friends
Mary:Is William really open to this whole thing?
Hannah:I really don't know now. I thought it was odd enough that he brought Robert around him. I think I need to do a little investigation into what Will's angle is
(We jump to the front of an office building where we find Christopher in disguise in a suit, hat and a pair of glasses)
Christopher:Are you sure this plan will work?
William:It has to
Christopher:What exactly is the plan again
William:I need you to distract him long enough to draw him out of his office and when he leaves I sneak in, cut the phone line, and I'll be out simple as that.
Christopher:Alright
William:Did you call the Headmaster?
Christopher:Yes, he's packing his bags to New York City as we speak
William:Great, lets get this done
(They walk into the office as the Secretary gets off the phone)
Secretary:Hello Gentlemen, what is it you seek?
Christopher:My name is Frederick Dodds and this is my nephew Thomas. We'd like to speak to Governor Quince
Secretary:He doesn't appear to have your name listed
Christopher:Oh, uh this was a private meeting, we had it set up just this morning
Secretary:Funny, we didn't have any calls
Christopher:Well, uh
William:Breakfast we set it up over breakfast
Secretary:Well go ahead but I'm keeping a close watch
William:If you must excuse me, I must use the restroom
Christopher:Meet you in the room in a few minutes!
(William heads one way and Christopher heads another, Christopher knocks on Governor Quince's door)
Governor Quince:Come in
(Christopher enters)
Governor Quince:Who are you?
Christopher:John Turner of the Turner Company
Governor Quince:THE Turner Company?
Christopher:Yes
Governor Quince:Oh my, take a seat Mr.Turner
(Christopher sits down)
Governor Quince(slightly sweating):So what brings you here?
Christopher:A business deal
Governor Quince:Well right now I'm seeking a merger with Edward Banks
Christopher:Who?
Governor Quince:Edward Banks...he was at the party a few months ago
Christopher(still confused):Oh yes, Edward Banks, helluva guy
Governor Quince:Beh, he's a hack of a business owner. Thats why I'm glad I'm taking over
Christopher:Well I was thinking...how bout we talk about a merger instead
(Governor Quince's eyes shine)
Governor Quince:Well how about you and I discuss this over lunch
Christopher(slightly nervous):I'd be delighted
Governor Quince:Well come on Mr.Turner, lets hit the road!
(They both get up and walk out the office. As they walk out William walks into the office and sits down at the desk)
William:Lets see what he has
(He looks all over the desk and finds the contract merging both of the companies)
William:This must be it
(He reads over it his face turns into a frown)
William:Oh dear god, if dad sees this, he'll freak
(There is a knock on the door)
William:Oh damn, um...(he impersonates Governor Quince)Who is it?
(On the other side the David the Desk Clerk is there)
Desk Clerk:Its me sir, David Ewing
William:Oh come in
(William turns the chair around as the Desk Clerk enters)
Desk Clerk:Sir I am quite glad to finally get a hold of you
William:Make it quick
Desk Clerk:Well sir, there was incident
William(angered):What kind of incident?
Desk Clerk:Um...lets just say the book was stolen
Willam:That book?
Desk Clerk:Yes, young Donald's journal
William:Well what did he look like?
Desk Clerk:He was around 5'11, thin, brown hair, wearing a Red Sox cap looked like a teenager
William:Well look for him
Desk Clerk:Its not that easy sir
William:What do you mean?
Desk Clerk:He got away
William:Woopee doo, do something about it
Desk Clerk:I really can't sir
William:Whats General Freak doing about it?
Desk Clerk:You mean the Headmaster?
William:Same difference
Desk Clerk:Well he's in New York
William:New York?
Desk Clerk:Yes for a meeting
William:This is redicolous. I'll tell you what I'm going to give you to the count of 10 to get your ugly pathetic self out of my office. You have one week to find it or I'll make sure you both get fired
Desk Clerk:Yes sir, I'll get right on it!
(He runs out of the room)
William:I got to get out of here
(He takes the contract stuffs it in his pocket and leaves a different route)
End Scene 7B
Scene 8A
(We find Robert and William sitting outside with the contract)
Robert:This is bad man
William:I know, luckily we got a hold of it
Robert:Won't Governor Quince be a tad suspicious?
William:I think he's got bigger concerns
(Cut to Quince's office)
Governor Quince:Where the hell are my papers?
Donald:I thought they were at home?
Governor Quince:No I left them here, they were right in front of me when I was talking to Jonathan Turner
Donald:THE John Turner?
Governor Quince:Yes him
Donald:When was this?
Governor Quince:Yesterday?
Donald:Dad, I think you've lost it
Governor Quince:What do you mean?
Donald:Mr.Turner is in England
Governor Quince:When did you hear this?
Donald:Yesterday at the Country Club, his nephew is a member
Governor Quince:Then who was I speaking to?
Donald:I have no idea
Governor Quince:I've been had!
Donald:Your not the only one, I think we're both in a tight spot
Governor Quince:What do you mean?
Donald:The Fake John Turner and the strange man claiming to know about..."Helena"
Governor Quince:What doo you mean?
Donald:I've been receiving these phone calls from a man who knows about her
Governor Quince:What have they been saying
Donald:They're threatening my security, I have no idea how they found out
Governor Quince:You don't suppose it was that professor?
Donald:Didn't sound like him, I suspect he may have some involvement though in this
Governor Quince:Its hard to tell, but if we don't react fast this "informer" might rat us out to the media and that will be it for the both of us I say we head to Cambridge tomorrow to get the whereabouts of Professor Daugherty.
Donald:Why don't we just call over?
Governor Quince:My phone wire has been cut
Donald:What do you mean?
Governor Quince:Someone came in here and cut my phone wire off. I suspect that the fake John Turner was involved in this
Donald:You think the two are in cahoots?
Governor Quince:Most likely, we'll head to Cambridge in the morning and see if we can get any info on Daugherty
Donald:The unusual part about it is that the caller seems to have feelings for Hannah
Governor Quince:What do you mean?
Donald:He's telling me to stay away from her
Governor Quince:This is too suspicious, we must put an end to this immediately.
Donald:I'm afraid father I have to decline, I have a date tonight
Governor Quince:Well then, I'll head over myself. I'll see you later tonight my son
End Scene 8A
Scene 8B
(Later that evening we find Robert and William at William's house throwing the baseball. Donald arrives)
William:Eh-Hey Donnie, whats happening?
Donald:About to take my fair lady out
William:Sounds fun
Donald:What are you two doing?
Robert:Throwing the old ball around
Donald:Ha, how bout I do you both a favor and you go out with two of my old dames
William:Not interested in their type
Donald:You don't even know them
William:I know your type though
Donald:And how would you know that?
William:Well you ARE dating my sister
Donald:Point taken but frankly your sister is a fine young lady
(She walks outside)
Donald:Ah speak of an angel here she is now
Hannah:Oh Donald, your so sweet
Donald:Just like candy
William:You two have fun
Donald:Oh we will...
(They get in the car and leave)'
William:And now we spring into action
Robert:What do you mean?
William:Act II of Saboteur; we scare him out by saying we're everywhere and we're not going to stop coming
Robert:Well how are we getting there?
(A Car pulls up, Christopher is inside)
William:You were saying?
(They enter the vehicle. Meanwhile in Cambridge we find that Governor Quince has arrived. He enters through the doors where he finds the Desk Clerk reading the paper)
Governor Quince:David...Alexander...Winstrom...
(The Desk Clerk looks up and jumps out of his seat)
Desk Clerk:Governor Quince, sir
Governor Quince:No time for greetings, David, this is very serious
Desk Clerk:What can it be sir?
Governor Quince:Where is Professor Daugherty?
Desk Clerk:Jail, sir
Governor Quince:Ah, where at in jail?
Desk Clerk:Here
Governor Quince:What do you mean, "here"
Desk Clerk:He was arrested last week for theft of the book
Governor Quince:You mean "that" book?
Desk Clerk:Yes
Governor Quince:And why was not informed of this?
Desk Clerk:You were, I told you yesterday
Governor Quince:Dave, are you crazy? I haven't seen you in months
Desk Clerk:I talk to you yesterday
Governor Quince:Theres no way!
Desk Clerk:Yes there is
Governor Quince:What time?
Desk Clerk:Noonish
Governor Quince:I was out with...good god
Desk Clerk:What?
Governor Quince:That imposter, he had to be involved in this
Desk Clerk:Imposter, sir?
Governor Quince:Yes I was duped into this meeting with this so-called "John Turner"
Desk Clerk:Was he the one I was speaking to?
Governor Quince:Most likely not, this had to be a two man job
Desk Clerk:Where do you get that from?
Governor Quince:There is someone that keeps phoning my son and telling him he knows about a few of his secrets
Desk Clerk:It must be that boy!
Governor Quince:What boy?
Desk Clerk:The one that stole the book
Governor Quince:What did he look like?
Desk Clerk:He had brown hair with jeans and a white t-shirt, him and Daugherty broke in here and stole it
Governor Quince:Do the police have a composite sketch?
Desk Clerk:Yes I believe so
Governor Quince:Well lets get to the police station then
End Scene 8B
Scene 9A
(We find Hannah and Donald inside the restraunt eating)
Hannah:I will say Donald that this is the best place I've been to for dinner
Donald:Only the best for my darling. As my father would say, "why settle for less when you can go for more?"
(Meanwhile outside we find Robert, William, and Christopher)
Christopher:I see them now, whats the plan?
William:You call in the place and ask for Donald
Christopher:Sounds rather easy, what will you two be doing?
William:Keeping an eye on to see if anything goes down
Robert:We could always have some fun with this
William:You thinking what I'm thinking?
Robert:Great minds do think alike
William:Lets do it
(Meanwhile at the Cambridge Police Station we find Governor Quince and the Desk Clerk, David entering the police station)
Sheriff:Ah, Governor Quince how are you today?
Governor Quince:Can't Chit-Chat now, officer this is a security issue. I need the sketch of the young man that was an accomplice with a Daugherty last week
Sheriff:Ah yes, we'll have the picture in a few minutes. Would you like to speak to Daugherty?
Governor Quince:Yes, I feel him and I need to have a discussion
Sheriff:He's in the back room
(Governor Quince enters the back room where Daugherty is)
Professor Daugherty:Governor Quince
Governor Quince:Don't even say my name, I know you were involved in that theft
Professor Daugherty:Proudly yes, for the sake of an innocent girl
Governor Quince:Where is the boy?
Professor Daugherty:Couldn't tell you, I wouldn't anyways
Governor Quince:Not even for a million?
Professor Daugherty:You can't buy me out I'm an honorable man, a man who believes in dignity, trust, and morality
Governor Quince:You seem like a nice guy but nice guys finish last. Reality check, I'm the Governor and you're a disgraced College professor
Professor Daugherty:Say what you will but many tyrants have fallen over the years...you're next, Governor and your son
Governor Quince:We'll see about that, Professor
(The Sheriff enters)
Sheriff:We got the sketch, Governor Quince
Governor Quince:Excellent, well Professor, my time here is over you and your little buddy and whoever the third man may be will see many years in a jail cell.
Professor Daugherty:We'll see about that, Governor
(Governor Quince exits the room sits down at the table and looks at the sketch)
Governor Quince(surprised):Is this the man, David?
(The Desk Clerk walks over)
Desk Clerk:Yes it is
(We see the sketch of William)
Governor Quince:Well then, David, I know where our next stop is
(Meanwhile back at the restraunt we find that a waiter has approached Donald)
Waiter:Sir, I believe there is a phone call for you
Donald:Ah, it must be my father
(He walks over to the phone)
Donald:Yes dad?
Christopher:This isn't daddio
Donald:You again!
Christopher:Yes, I saw you in the restraunt with Hannah, I warned you before; do I have to do it again or should I squeal?
Donald:Look here you rat, I'm not afraid of you I got more power and money you can imagine I'll sue you for slander and I'll make sure you never see daylight again
Christopher:If I were you, I'd watch my mouth. Remember my fate rests in your hands
Donald:I will not be intimidated by a terrorist like you
Christopher:Just leave her, thats all you have to do, break it off and I'm fine. If you, however, continue this, it'll be over
Donald:You must be a journalist, I can guarantee you a job in any paper in America. Just tell me and you got it
Christopher:I don't want your money, I don't want your offers, I just want you to back off
Donald:Fine that settles it, me and you, tell me where you are, and I'll meet you there. Because you're cruisin for a bruisin
Christopher:The abandon warehouse 2 blocks down
Donald:Fine I'll meet you there and we'll settle this
(He walks back over to Hannah)
Donald:Hannah, dear, I'm afraid I'll have to go somewhere real quick. But I promise I'll be back
Hannah:What is it?
Donald:Something at my dad's office, I shouldn't be long
Hannah:Alright, I love you
Donald:I love you too
(He exits)
(We find Governor Quince at the Banks House, he knocks on the door and Edward answers)
Edward:Oh, Governor Quince, what are you doing here this evening
Governor Quince:Where is William?
Edward:He's somewhere with Robert
Governor Quince:Do you have any idea where they could've went?
Edward:None at all, he might have a baseball game this evening
Governor Quince:Where is that at?
Edward:The Park on Adams Street
Governor Quince:Thank you, Edward
(He walks away and gets back into the car)
Desk Clerk:Well?
Governor Quince:Take us to the park
The Driver:Got it sir
(They drive off)
(Back at the restraunt we see Robert entering)
Robert:Yes, sir, uh where is your restrooms?
Clerk:Oh, its down the hallway its in the very back you can't miss it
Robert:Thanks
(He walks into the dining area, he is spotted by Hannah)
Hannah:Robert?
Robert:Yes?
Hannah:What are you doing here?
Robert:Walking around and checking the place out, my mother's company is having a party and they wanted me to scout locations
Hannah:Come take a seat
(He sits down)
Robert:Wheres Donald?
Hannah:He had an emergency, but he'll be back
Robert:Oh
Hannah:Wheres William?
Robert:He went back home
Hannah:Oh, hows Mary?
Robert:She's alright
Hannah:Thats good
(They both stare look down and slightly giggle)
Robert:I'm sorry
Hannah:Pardon?
Robert:I'm sorry
Hannah:For what?
Robert:What I did to you
(Meanwhile we find Donald entering the abandoned warehouse)
Donald:Alright where are you?
Christopher(speaking and unseen):I'm all around you
Donald:You don't scare me with your mind games. You are a mere coward. Show yourself
Christopher:I'm above that
Donald:Your a mere journalist, I'm the heir to the Quince Dynasty a future U.S. President, you couldn't possibly be above me
Christopher:On terms of integrity and morality, I am worlds above you
Donald:Say that to my face
(Foot steps are heard, Christopher is now on the same level as Donald. The smoke is seen but not Christopher)
Donald:You're just blowin smoke
(He takes the cigarette out of his mouth, throws it to the ground and stomps on it)
Christopher:I only speak the truth and the truth is that you, Donald Quince murdered Helena Grimes and your father plans to dupe Mr.Banks into a bad deal
Donald:So you were the one who broke in
Christopher:I also acquired your Journal, and distracted your father
Donald:Who are you?
Christopher:They call me The Seeker I seek information and give it to the needy
Donald:Your a journalist, I will get you a job
Christopher:I used to have a job but it was because of people like you that I lost it
Donald:I told you I will get you one
Christopher:I want my old job but with you its not possible
Donald:You're the one whose impossible. I guess if I can't talk I'll have to fight
Christopher:I don't think you want to do that
Donald:And why's that?
Christopher:Hannah is going to be suspicious why her little Donald is black and blue all around
Donald:You know what, I have no time for your games, I'm out of here. If you want a meeting then meet me tomorrow same place, same time and we'll settle this
Christopher:Be careful never stab your maker
(Donald leaves)
(Meanwhile back at the restraunt we find Robert and Hannah still talking)
Robert:I didn't mean to hurt you
Hannah:Then why did you do it?
Robert:I lost it, when I injured my arm I thought that was the end of everything. The end of my baseball career, the end of my dream, and the end of my relationship with you
Hannah:Why would you think that?
Robert:Because a girl like you is hard to get, you have to really impress her. I felt that without my baseball career I was just another two-bit bum from Boston and nothing else. Look at you, you're a millionaire, and look at me...I'm just Robert an 18 year old graduate whose career is about over and will wind up going nowhere in life
Hannah:You shouldn't think like that
Robert:Let me ask you, would you have loved me if I never lost my mind?
Hannah:Yes
Robert:Why?
Hannah:Because your one of the best guys I've ever met in my life. You treat me well, you respect me, you make me laugh, and you're always the for me. When my dog died, you were there. When I tore a muscle in my knee, you were there. When Donald hurt me, you were there. I guess I want to say...I still love you
Robert:You do?
Hannah:Yes and I know you probably don't feel the same but...
Robert:I'll admit...I never forgot about you. After the breakup it seemed like you were still there. When I tried to forget, you were still there and when I thought of other girls, they were all you
Hannah:Oh Robert,(she begins to cry)
Robert:Look don't cry, please don't
Hannah:I just don't know what to do, Donald seems the guy but...you're always there
(Donald re-enters the restraunt)
Donald:What is this? What are YOU doing here?
Robert:Oh I was just...
Donald:Just what? Look I am no mood to see anyone right now especially you after what you and Will did on Saturday night
Robert:You seemed fine earlier
Donald:Right now isn't fine, however, I have too many problems to deal with so you get out of my sight
Hannah:Whats wrong, Donald?
Donald:Nothing I just want to get out of here. I've already payed the bill lets go
(He gets her up and drags her out the door with him)
Robert:Now hold up a second
Donald:I will hold nothing, get away from me
Robert:Thats not how you treat a lady
Donald:And what would you know about treating a lady? You're just some tramp you wouldn't possibly know how to treat my girl or any other girl
Robert:I would know
Donald:And hows that?
Robert:Because she was mine first
Donald(frowning):What are you talking about?
Hannah:Robert, don't
Donald:What do you mean?
Robert:She don't want me to say the truth and that is love her. She is my girl you just came out of left field and threw the ball to her at home
Donald:What does it matter? I have her now, you just lost her
Robert:I haven't lost anything yet
Donald:Please, you can't stand toe to toe with me
(He continues dragging her out the door and evidently bumps into William)
Donald:Oh come on, now what?
William:Nothing, I was just in the neighborhood
(Donald pushes him)
Donald:Get away from me
(He keeps dragging Hannah down the street, a car pulls up Governor Quince exits)
Governor Quince:You two!
Donald:Us?
Governor Quince:No them
William:What about us?
Desk Clerk(exiting):I think you know what he's talking about
Governor Quince:Get them boys
(Two men in suits exit the car, Robert and William take off and they chase after them)
Hannah:What is going on?
Governor Quince:Get her in the car!
(They all get in the car and drive away)
End Scene 9A
Scene 9B
(We find Robert and William heavily breathing behind the bushes at William's house)
Robert:I thought you had this taken care of?
William:I thought I did too but Quince must've headed over to Cambridge and found out
Robert:They got Hannah!
William:Well what are we supposed to do?
Robert:I guess we can call the police and leak the story?
William:No do, we got to do it by force
Robert:But we have no way up there
William:I suppose I'll have to do what I have to do. He won't believe me though
(Edward walks up from behind)
Edward:About what?
William:Oh dad
Edward:You should be ashamed of yourself stealing from Harvard
William:Dad you don't understand
Edward:I know quite well your little buddy is it?
William:Look dad
Edward:Nothing about it I'm sending you to France at the end of the summer
William:But dad!
Edward:No buts about it you are...
(William shoves him to the ground)
William:Can you listen to me for one minute? Huh? Can ya? Or is that too redicolous in your little mind?
(Edward gets up)
Edward:How dare you strike me!
William:You know why I did it? Because I'm tired of you. I'm tired of your lies, your scandels the way you treat me. You're not even giving me a chance to tell MY side of the story!
Edward:Because its a lie one lie after another you're a true liar
William:Yeah I've done some bad things but this is a good thing
Edward:Theft isn't one savior
William:It is when my sister's life is on the line!
Edward:What?
Robert:Governor Quince is screwing you over and his son is going to kill Hannah
Edward:What is your proof
William:This!
(He hands over the contract. Edward reads it and his face drops to a more angered face)
Edward:This cannot be true!
(Out of the shadows Christopher appears)
Christopher:I'm afraid it is sir
Edward:Who are you?
Christopher:Chris Dodds, I am a former Board Member at Harvard. I helped steal the contract with your son
Edward:What is this about him killing my daughter?
Christopher:I am sorry to say this but Mr.Quince suffers from psychosis a terrible disease. Mr.Quince is a very sick man
Edward:What proof do you have?
William:His journal in my room, read it and you'll find your info
Robert:Please Mr.Banks, we need your car in order to get to Quince's home
Edward:Fine but if I find anything contrary to fact, I will call the police to arrest the three of you
William:Thank you dad, you won't regret it
Christopher:What are waiting for? Lets go!
End Scene 9B
Scene 10
(We find Donald at the mansion sitting on the couch with Hannah)
Hannah:What exactly happened tonight?
Donald:Nothing, its just your brother is a criminal
Hannah:What do you mean?
Donald:When he visited Harvard last week, he had other intentions
Hannah:What did he do?
Donald:He went into the school and stole this medal from a WW1 vet's office. Its believed his intentions were to sell it to the Commies for money
Hannah:Thats a little odd
Donald:Well look at your brother he's damn near paranoid
Hannah:I guess you got a point...when do I get to go home?
Donald:Your father will be here tomorrow, until then you can stay here
Hannah:Alright, I am going to lay down on the bed and see if there is anything on the TV
Donald:Alright my dear
(She exits to another room)
(Donald walks into his father's office where Governor Quince and the Desk Clerk are talking)
Donald:I am glad you all found out it was William but at the same time, I'm very upset with you two for crashing my date
Governor Quince:We had no other choice
Donald:Have you heard back from the two guards?
Governor Quince:Not yet, but its safe to assume that they got caught
Donald:Are you sure it was just Robert, William, and Daugherty?
Governor Quince:Not really, there has to be a 4th man theres no way that Robert pulled off the fake Turner
Donald:You have a point, but where can we find him?
Governor Quince:I'm very much sir they'll settle for a lesser jail sentence and rat him out
Donald:And if they don't?
Governor Quince:We'll find him eventually for all we know he's near
(Outside we find Robert, William, and Christopher pulling in and exiting the car)
William:Finally we're here
Christopher:We must stick together for now, but when we get an idea where everyone is, we will take down Quince
Robert:Well lets go then!
(They crowd around the house looking through various windows, they eventually find Hannah)
William:Ok, Robert, I want you to get in their with her and Christopher you talk to the Governor. I'll come in a bit later
(They split up. We see Hannah watching the TV. Robert knocks on the window. She looks over, shocked she opens it)
Hannah:What are you...?
Robert:Let me in
(He climbs in)
Hannah:You can't be here!
Robert:Why?
Hannah:You're supposed to be in jail with William
Robert:Well we're not
Hannah:What do you mean we're not?
Robert:We escaped from the police and are here to save you
Hannah:Save me?
Robert:Yes
Hannah:From what?
Robert:Donald
Hannah:Look Rob, you and Will have caused too much trouble today
Robert:We didn't do any crime
Hannah:What do you mean?
Robert:Yes, William may have stolen something from Cambridge. It was a journal. Not just any journal but the one of Donald Quince
Hannah:I knew it, why would he do this?
Robert:To save you
Hannah:What exactly is wrong with Donald?
Robert:He's a murderer
Hannah:Thats a lie! Donald would never kill anyone!
Robert:It is not a lie, its the truth
Hannah:Do you got any proof? Where is this journal?
Robert:Its not with us but the fact remains a few years ago he was with a Helena Grimes, a student of Radcliffe University. He was madly in love with her but he abused her heavily. One night, she took off and was never seen until recently when they discovered her body in the water. That water is in the same area as the water here. As a matter of fact, it flows into it. Its our belief that he murdered her!
Hannah:Donald would never do that! He's a nice person and a great guy
Robert:The same Donald who struck you? The same Donald who has lied about his Harvard life?
Hannah:He may have struck me but it was an accident and he has never lied to me
Robert:Hannah, his accomplishments at Harvard are fake. Ask anyone there and they'll tell you
Hannah:Thats enough, I am telling Donald immediately
(She walks over to the door)
Robert:I will not let you!
(He runs over, wraps around her and takes her to the ground with him covering her mouth. Meanwhile Christopher knocks on the front door and Governor Quince answers)
Governor Quince:Ah hello Christopher
(The Desk Clerk gets a stunned look)
Christopher:Good evening sir
Governor Quince:What brings you here?
Christopher(looking over at the Desk Clerk):That man right there!
Governor Quince:David? What has he done?
Christopher:He and the headmaster has wrongfully terminated me and I demand my job back
Desk Clerk:That is an outrage, sir this whole ordeal may have never happened had it not been for his incompatence
Governor Quince:What exactly happened?
Desk Clerk:He had prior knowledge of the boy's presence
Governor Quince:I know that, but whats your point?
Desk Clerk:He could've prevented this
Christopher:As could you, you were the one who let him into the Headmaster's office
Desk Clerk:True but I had no idea of the boys intentions
Christopher:Nonetheless, you should've known something was up when he refered himself as the Headmaster's son
Desk Clerk:In my defense, I have never actually seen the Headmaster's son
Christopher:You still could've done something instead of chit chatting with Ms. Maybelle
Desk Clerk:Slander me will ya?
Governor Quince:Gentlemen, Gentlemen, relax, Christopher you can have your job back, and David, its no ones fault this thing just happened. Lets look on the bright side Gentlemen, Mr William Banks and Robert Whoever are in jail with Professor Daugherty. There is nothing to worry about
(We cut to another room where we find Donald reading a book, a door opens and William enters)
Donald:You again? Will you ever just die?
William:Not until the truth is revealed
Donald:I guess you do know about my past, Mr.Banks?
William:I very much so, do
Donald:How much?
William:I know that you were with Helena Grimes. I know about your "holocaust" vision and all other things you think of
Donald:You've done your research, I see
William:Only way to beat a villian is to learn about him
Donald:Truth be told, I'll tell you what happened to Helena Grimes. It was a foggy Friday evening, we didn't have the steadious relationship. She was more into trying to change the world for women's rights and I wanted to settle down, be married, have kids, and her my first lady in office. One night she drove up here and we met on the deck where she told me, she wanted out...I didn't like that.
(Over in the other room we see Hannah and Robert continuing to struggle)
Donald:Lets just say things went dark for a second and the next thing I knew I was holding a gun and she was on the ground
(Hannah and Robert keep fighting but she breaks away by elbowing him to the face. She tries to run to the door but he trips her)
Donald:I was stunned so I took her body and threw it in the water hoping it would never return...(he pulls out his gun)funny I never thought I'd have to use this again)
(Hannah bites Robert and gets to the door, she opens it)
Donald:I'm going to blow you away just like Helena Grimes
Hannah:Donald!
Donald:Hannah?
Hannah:You really killed her?
Donald:Oh, uh...baby please this is just a misunderstanding
Hannah:You did, did you?
Donald:Yes, I did but just like your brother its for a good cause
(He turns around and shoots William, William falls to the ground seemingly dead)
Hannah:Noooooooooooooooooo! You killed him, you killed my brother!
(Hearing the noise, Governor Quince opens his door)
Governor Quince:Donald, what...
(He looks to the floor where he finds William on the ground bleeding)
Governor Quince:Oh my god
Donald:Stay out of this dad
Governor Quince:Good to see you took care of the garbage
Donald:Thats not the only garbage that needs to be taken out
(He turns the gun and shoots Governor Quince. Quince falls to the floor)
Governor Quince(weak):Why?
Donald:I just don't you anymore old man, I got my inheritance to worry about
(Governor Quince dies)
(Donald grabs Hannah)
Donald:Now if you would excuse me, Robert, me and my lady have an inheritance to collect and an alibi, Good knowing you, Rob
(He lights a match and throws it to the ground, soon the floor is on fire. Donald drags Hannah off. Quickly thinking, Robert picks up William's body and runs out into the other room where the Desk Clerk and Christopher are)
Desk Clerk:What was that noise?
Robert:Nothing lets just get out of here
(They all run out of the house as it is burning)
Christopher:What happened?
Robert:Quince killed his father and William, you two have to get to the police. I don't care what alliances you have none of that matters right now
Desk Clerk:Alright
(The Desk Clerk and Christopher run off. Meanwhile down the hill we find Donald trying to start the car but it won't go)
Donald:Dammit, we'll have to continue this on foot
(He continues dragging her)
Hannah:Where are you taking us?
Donald:There has to be someway out of here, so I'm going to take you to the afterlife
Hannah:What do you mean?
Donald:Insurance wise you're worth more dead than alive to me
Hannah:Where are you taking me?
(He continues dragging her)
Donald:Gun fire is a bit suspicious so I figure your trial will be by water. Don't hope you can swim
(As he's about to throw her off the cliff, Robert starts to choke him and pulls him to the ground)
Donald:Why won't you just die?
(He elbows Robert in the face but Robert continues with the choke)
Robert:Haven't you seen the movies? Good always beats evil
Donald:I don't live in a fantasy world. I have more money, more knowledge, and more strength than you!
(He kicks up, grabs Robert and seemingly throws him off the cliff, but Robert is hanging on loosely on the edge of the cliff)
Donald:I have had enough of you, your little bitch of a girl, and that pesky brother of hers
(He draws his gun and aims it at him)
Donald:Now its time to end you
(Just before he pulls the trigger, William runs up from behind him and tackles him off the cliff. Both William and Donald fall and land disappear as they seemingly fall to their deaths. Robert using his last strength pulls himself up. Hannah and Robert sit down next to each other. She begins to cry and puts her head on his shoulder as they embrace)
Hannah(narrating):Though it cost him his life, my brother was a hero to a lot of people. The police were able to believe us as we had witnesses from Christopher, David, my father, and Professor Daugherty. William was buried nearby Fenway Park, the place he loved the most. Donald's body, however, was never found. The funerals of Governor Quince and Donald were overshadowed by the scandal of Donald's journal and the murders of Helena Grimes and the Governor, himself. Following an investigation the Headmaster of Harvard was fired and sentenced to 20 years for conspiracy. Christopher was named the Headmaster. My father's business stayed in tact. Professor Daugherty was rehired by Harvard and allowed to continue teaching. The best part of all was that Robert and I got married on September 23, 1955. Our dreams had come true but we'll never forget that summer in 1954...
The End
